LOBOS PILE UP EARLY LEAD TO BEAT NORTH SIDE
FORT WORTH - Longview's 8-AAAA Lobos barely got their jerseys wet in dealing North Side of Fort Worth a 26-8 licking here Friday night in a game so lopsided that even the Steers saw the kill coming in the first quarter.

Lobo control of things held from first kickoff to the last snapback.

Victory here marked Longview's second straight non-district win in as many weeks. The spirited eleven, which has some of the best team work in years for a Lobo club, outdid Sunset of Dallas in a 32-21 thriller last week.

Longview's strong forward wall shone like a missile in the sunset against the vastly weaker North Side line. Guards Jerry Earnhardt and Cleve Allison were the strong pivots with ends Larry Seale and Stewart Ferrell, and tackles Buddy Cochran and Robert Sullivan dealing the Steers more misery than they could take.

Overwhelming mastery of the game also gave coach Jim Gray a chance to get some of the other boys off the bench. Seeing action for the first time were halfback Roddy Bland, fullback Willard Wright and Paul Ketchum. Ends Mike DeLatin and Bobby McLendon. Tackles Billy Ewing, guards Johnine Owens, Gay Glover, Roger Wells and back Elick Maledon.

Toting the ball over for Longview touchdowns were halfbacks Douglas Bruner, Pete Mobbs and Ray Chancelor and fullback Larry Shoemaker. Quarterback Kim Flint's good right arm account for one pay-play.

Quarterback Don Petty, who duties include kicking off and backing the line on defense, got first taste of the lonely command post. He replaced Flint in quarterback slot during final periods of the game.

First period play went as slow as a snail, with both teams taking turnabouts at trying to punch the ball down field.

Lobo halfback Larry Shoemaker turned the slow march into a fast step with a quick kick that sailed 52 yards, setting play on the Steer 10. The Steers got mired down and had to kick out. Steer Quarterback Ronnie Brown slapped a toe into the pigskin to move play back to midfield, but the Green Tide had its mind made up. Shoemaker started the ball rolling goalward with a 12-yard dash for a first down. He came back after one try by Flint to pick up 11 more yards and another first down. Halfback Bruner punched out another first down on a 9-yard scamper.

The payoff came when Bruner broke through tackle of the final 9. Halfback Chancelor's conversion was blocked, setting the tally at 6-0 with a second and a half left in the first quarter.

Quarterback Flint's aim was good on a pass to Mobbs for the second touchdown five minutes into the second quarter. Flint repeated to Chancelor for the conversion, putting the Lobos ahead, 14-0.

The tally had begun rolling up like a pinball machine and Chancelor caught touchdown fever. He glided into a North Side pass as if it was meant for him and didn't get a shirt tail touch before crossing pay dirt 71 yards away. Petty's conversion from placement went wide, but the Lobos had racked up two touchdowns in a fast 36 seconds.

North Side's single trip to pay dirt came on an 8-yard run by halfback Jerry Nunn in the second quarter. Brown carried for the two extra points.

The half ended on the sweet 20-8 Lobo lead.

The Lobos pulled back the rod and lessened steam throughout the second half but they didn't forget where the end zone was.

Late in the third quarter they burned down field like wildfire, picking up 4 first downs. Shoemaker then dashed one from the 4 for the final touchdown of the game.

The fourth quarter was scoreless, with Longview reserve strength getting in some experience.

Earnhardt received a leg injury shortly before the half and was carried off the field. Preliminary examination indicated he had a badly twisted ankle.
