LOBO JUGGERNAUT ROLLS OVER ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, 34-6
FORT WORTH - The Longview Lobos ran into some boys who started playing rough before the Wolves were quite ready for that kind of carrying on and as a result, they were playing catch-up here Friday night before the game was half a minute old, but they were in all things more than equal to the occasion as they turned on the heat in the third quarter for three touchdowns to stun the scrappy Arlington Heights Yellow Jacket club 34 to 6. It was the third win for the Lobos in three outings.

Everything was routine when the Lobos took the opening kickoff and ran it back to their 36, but after that things sort of got out of hand.

Douglas Bruner fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and Walter Frazier, a 205-pound Jacket tackle pinched on it on the Lobo 36.

Running from a tricky spread formation, the Cowtowners sent Joe Lee Burns, their fine quarterback around left end and he went all the way for a touchdown. Only 26 seconds of playing time had elapsed.

John Hornburn's attempt to run over the conversion for two points was stopped.

The Wolves used the rest of the first quarter to waken themselves somewhat gently but at the end of the period they were looking for raw meat. The charging forwards knocked Hornburg loose front he ball in the fading minutes of the period and big George Hogan gathered it in on the Jacket 35. Abney ran left end for 8 and Mack Thomas hit left guard for 7 more to the 20. Bill Coley and Thomas moved in two plays to the 14 and Thomas went down the middle on the next play to score.

Bob Abney's pass attempt for the bonus conversion failed and the score was knotted at 6-6.

Four minutes deep into second quarter, the Wolves went ahead to stay. They used a fumble recovery by big andy Malone on the Jackets' 41 as a launching pad and moved to a score. On the third play from scrimmage Bruner buzzed through left tackle, cut sharply to his left and and did a tight wire act down the sideline for 28 yards and a touchdown. Abney smashed into the middle for the 2-pointer and the Lobos went into the halftime with a 14-to-6 bulge.

One thing that a kicker finds real unhandy is a couple of tackles in his lap when he is trying to ply his trade. Bob Bradley, a good journeyman punter who got off several fine boots in the first half, found a seemingly enraged Lobo line charging into him early in the third quarter and one of them crashed into the kicker. Both Bradley and the blocker were hurt and left the game, Bradley not being able to resume any of the kicking chores.

The next time a Jacket punt situation came up Homer Price tried to do the job and got off a kick that was practically blocked. The Jackets war back to their 1-yard line and the boot went only to their 13. Larry Shoemaker carried to the 10 and from there Abney flipped to Bruner in the end zone for a touchdown. Abney fumbled the conversion and it soured, leaving the score 20 to 6.

The identical process was repeated less than two minutes later and Price, besieged by Lobo linemen, kicked only 6 yards from his own 13 to the 19. Abney fired another to Bruner in the end zone and it was 28 to 6 when Shoemaker smashed left tackle for the 2-pointer.

A Price fumble on his own 34 moments later was recovered by the Wlves and they set sail again, this time on the first play. Abney heaved to Ray Chancelor and he went all the way for the final score.

The last quarter saw coach Catfish Smith practically clean off his bench and the youngsters players the Jackets on almost even terms.

As has been the case in the Lobos' outings all this year a fine line set the enemy back on his haunches and kept him there all night - most of it, that is. AFter those first 26 seconds the Wolves had to get up off theirs and sort of take stock before they could do anything.

Powerful blocking both in the line and downfield plus one of the most determined exhibitions of running local fans have seen this year enabled the scrappy Thomas to turn in a right creditable solo performance in gaining 101 yards in 15 carries to lead all backs.

The Yellow Jackets had their stingers out when the game started but the big aggressive Lobo front wall started to put the pressure on and to work over the ball carriers with one crunching tackle after another and the locals attack simply melted under it.
