LOBOS WIN OPENER FROM SOC, 22-6
LONGVIEW - The Longview Lobos, held down by a rugged South Oak Cliff defense for two full quarters, broke loose with some fancy stuff and some bone-crushing blocking in the third quarter here last night and kept it up all the way to the wire to stun the Golden Bears in the clubs' season opener, 22 to 6.

Less than a minute deep in the second half - the first play from scrimmage, in fact - the Wolves suddenly shook off their lethargy, found themselves, and from that point on they looked like they were in the middle of the season instead of in the opener. That went for the whole squad, for when the final gun sounded the third and fourth stringers were still pressing an attack at the outgunned Bruins.

The first play from scrimmage was a SOC fumble which Andy Malone and Jerry Earnhart grabbed on the visitors' 36. Bob Abney promptly pitched one to Larry Boswell for nine and two plays later he pitched out to Mack Thomas, who skittered to the six. A defender got clobbered by Billy Coley at a key point, and the play glided smoothly to the six. Thomas took another pitchout, circled right end and went in for the touchdown with 4:20 left in the period.

Abney rolled out on the converse and on an option play headed for the right sideline, stepping into the end zone for the two points just before the was hit. The Wolves led 8-0.

The Bruins did not roll over and play dead.

A few minutes later a Thomas fumble was recovered by Bobby Espey on the Bear 42 and the visitors turned on the heat. Dwayne Ballew pitched to Ray Roden, Wallace Brumley, Larry Libby and Charles Adams in that order, the last one being good for 35 yards to the Lobo 8. Four plays later Haskell Murehead on a keeper went over from the 1. Murehead's attempted pass to Brumley for the conversion was incomplete.

The Bears tried an onside kick on the kickoff and the Wolves covered on the SOC 49. Coley on a trap play scooted down the middle for four and on the next down Abney faked to Coley again then pitched to Larry Shoemaker who went wide to the 20. Four plays later, Shoemaker went over from the 1. On a repeat performance, Abney ran it over for another two-point and a 16-6 lead.

The final marker came in the fourth period when Bill Williams, Bruin tackle, kicked from near his own goal line to Pete Mobbs on the SOC 49 and the trick little half-back flipped the pigskin to Ray Chancelor on a reverse. Chancelor headed for the east sideline and went all the way. When he reached the 35, he was given another life as Coley, who mowed down a Bruin tackler and paved the way. He went in standing up.

Abney tried a place-kick this time and it failed.

With Kim Flint in at quarterback the Lobo second string was having a little trouble in the game, but Flint hit Mobbs with a flip that carried 57 yards to the SOC 17. They were knocking on the door when Flint threw on that was intercepted on the goal line by Jerry Avreft. The Bears moved up to midfield before Flick Maledon intercepted a https://lobohistory.comhead heave to end the threat.

The first half was played pretty much in front of the press box, with the Lobos making a couple of fairly interesting threats and the Bears chipping in with one.

Early in the first period Hugh Hammett, Longview center, recovered a South Oak Cliff fumble on the Bear 30 and the fans got ready for a payoff. It never came. Shoemaker made a yard in a try at center and then picked up four more to the 25. Abney pitched an incomplete pass on third down and on fourth repeated the operation to let the ball go over.

In the second quarter one of Abney's heaves was intercepted by Haskell Murehad on the Bear 45 and he high-tailed it to the Lobo 22 before he was fielded. Dwayne Ballew got trapped trying to pass and was bounced back on the 28. A couple of short gains were interlarded with a 5-yard offside penalty against the Bruins and a 4-yard loss by Jerry Avrett, and the net result was that the Lobos threw the Bears back to their 30 and took over on downs.

Near the end of the second quarter the Wolves took over when Malone grabbed a Bruin fumble on the Lobo 43. Bruner chipped in with a 25-yarder and Abney moments later flipped to Boswell on the 13, but the defense of the Bears got hard-nosed at that point and that's as far as the drive went.

Numerous characters are serving time in Huntsville for hitting other people less viciously that the two clubs hit each other last night. Crisp, teeth-rattling blocks and tackles were the rule rather than the exception. Coley in particular blocked like a demon, and he threw two key blocks that brought the Wolves a total of 16 points.

The first came early in the third period when Thomas was headed goal ward from the SOC 25. Coley upended a defender to help Thomas go 19 to the six, and Thomas scored on the next play.

Then in the fourth after Chancelor took the handoff from Mobbs on Williams' kick, he was barreling down the sideline when a big tackler appeared to bar the way. Coley unbarred it with a block that made the rest of Chancelor's romp as easy as picking grapes.

Big Andy Malone and George Hogan used the 458 pounds of beef they carry around in a highly effective manner on defense. The Bruins didn't get to first base with the middle of the Lobo line, largely because of these two big boys' efforts. And a little item which should have been mentioned before is that these and other aggressive Lobo linemen hit opposing ball carriers hard enough to make them fumble six times - and five times green-shirted boys recovered the loose pigskins.

There were a few rough spots early in the Lobo attack but they smoothed out in the third quarter. The defense was salty all the way.
