LOBOS EDGE BALL TORS, 6-0
LONGVIEW - Riding the sharp passing arm of quarterback Bill Bolger and the fine running of halfback Harry Moore behind the rugged defensive play of their stout forward wall the Longview Lobos wound up their non-conference slate by pushing over a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to edge the Ball High Tors of Galveston in a tight defensive battle here Friday night, 6-0.

The victory undoubtedly was a sweet one for Longivew coach Catfish Smith, who got up from a sick bed to direct the Lobos on the field, for it gave the locals their best non-conference record since 1952 and left them with an open date next week and an opportunity to recover from the effects of an influence outbreak before they open the District 8-AAAA race against Marshall here Nov. 1.

The Longview regulars, quarterback Bob Abney and end David Duncan, were not in uniform for the contest because of influenza and end Robert Gillock and several other members of the squad shook off their recent illness to play.

Gillock scored the lone touchdown of the game on a beautiful 33 had pass from Bolger on the second play of the final period after the Lobos recovered a Ball fumble on Galveston's 32.

The win was Longview's fourth against one loss and a tie while the defeat as the fifth straight for the winless Tors. It marked the third time this season that the Lobos have blanked an opponent and the fourth time the Tors have failed to score.

Longview's alert defense repeatedly thwarted the Tors by intercepting passes and recovering Galveston fumbles. Ball fumbled four time sand the Lobos pounced on three of them while the Tors did not complete a pass in seven attempts as the Lobos picked off three to run their total pass interceptions for the season to 16, an average of four per game.

The Lobos started briskly after Doulgas Bruner returned the opening kickoff 17 yards to his own 34. with Bolger, Eddy Cooper and Billy Coley alternating in the ball-carrying chores, Longview picked up three straight first downs to reach the Galveston 30-yard line but the drive floundered there and the Tors held for downs.

Guy Stafford recovered a fumble early in the second period to give Galveston a scoring opportunity but the Tors were unable to take advantage of it and a penalty provided highly costly to them.

Frank Annweller, Ronnie Graber and Alvin Newkirk pushed the ball down to Longview's 11-yard line where the Tors had fourth down and three yards to go. They were over-anxious, however, and jumped offside before the snap from center to draw a five yard penalty that set them back to the Longview 16. Newkirk's pass to Annweller fell incomplete and the Lobos took over.

The Galveston eleven got another march going early in the second quarter, only to see it broken up when end tommy Vestal recovered a fumble for Longview on his own 20-yard stripe.

After Gillock kicked out of trouble, the Tors came right back with another threat but that one failed, too, when Gillock recovered a Galveston fumble on Longview's 32-yard line.

From there the Lobos launched their most serious scoring threat of the first half. Tommy Matthews and Bolger picked up a first down in two sweeps and a pass from Bolger to Larry Shoemaker added another on Galveston's 45-yard line. Bolger, Moore and Matthews kept hammering at the visitors' line for another first down on the Galveston 20 but four plays lacked a lone yard of keeping the drive alive and the Tors gained possession on their own 11.

Galveston moved out of danger quickly but Cooper intercepted a pass on Longview's 49-yard line and Bolger immediately flipped a 22 yard pass to Moore for a first down on the Tors' 29-yard line but time ran out in the first half before the Lobos could get another play under way.

The Tors almost got a touchdown in the opening minutes of the third quarter when Clifford Bryant returned Gillock's punt 5 yards to Longview's 10-yard stripe before Moore finally ran him down. However, a 15 yard clipping penalty on the play set Galveston back to its own 31-yard line and eight plays later Gillock intercepted Newkirk's pass on the Longview 27.

Late in the third period the Lobos threatened again on a sustained march that reach the Galveston 15 before the Tors' stubborn defense stopped it. An 18 yard end sweep by Moore and a 13 yard pass from Bolger to Vestal sparked the drive but when Longview got to the 15 the Tors were equal to the occasion and four plays lost 10 yards with Galveston taking over on its own 25.

Cooper recovered a fumble on the first play of the fourth quarter to set the stage for Longview's touchdown. On the first play after the recovery, Bolger dropped back and fired a 32 yard pass to Gillock for the score. The Longview end was in the open on the five as he made a fine catch over his shoulder and romped into the end zone.

Mike Clark's place kick on the try for extra point was wide and low.

Just four plays later Bolger turned in the most scintillating run of the game when he took a punt on his own 27-yard line, started to his right but reversed his field and raced 73 yards down the west sideline untouched with the aid of a block by Vestal, who took out the last Galveston defender on the 10 as Bolger kept swerving around the tacklers and kept going. The whole play, however, was rubbed out when the Lobos drew a 15 yard penalty for roughing the kicker and gave the Tors continued possession of the ball with a first down in the bargain.
