LOBOS ROLL ON BY DOWNING NORTH DALLAS, 26-0
LONGVIEW - The Longview Lobos overcame a week-long outbreak of influenza by turning in one of their most sparkling exhibitions of the season to defeat the North Dallas Bulldogs here Friday night, 26-0.

The victory enabled the Lobos to remain undefeated, although tied, in four games this season while the defeat was the third for North Dallas in four starts.

All but one of the numerous Longview players who had been sidelined by influenza during the week, end Larry Boswell, were in uniform for the contest and did yeoman service, although some of them were used sparingly and others were frequently relieved in order to give them a much-needed rest.

It marked the second time in their four games that the Lobos have shutout the opposition and was the first time since 1952 that a Longview eleven has blanked two foes in a single campaign.

The stout defense of the Lobos was very much in evidence again as Longview limited North Dallas to a total gain of 125 net yards, 94 on the ground and 31 more through the air. The alert Longview secondary intercepted more North Dallas passes than the Bulldogs were able to complete as the Lobos snared no less than five, two of them by end Lee Gresham, while the losers completed only three.

Longview, on the other hand, flashed its best offense of the season by rolling up a net of 364 yards, 257 by rushing and another 107 passing.

North Dallas made only one serious scoring threat, advancing to Longview's 11-yard line in the opening moments of the second quarter with the air of a 42 yard end sweep by halfback Gary McBridge but it died there when Longview held for downs and quickly drove out of danger.

It was a unique game in many ways and only tremendous yardage in penalties against the Lobos kept them from making the margin of their victory even wider. They were penalized 11 times for a total of 141 yards while North Dallas drew a single penalty for five yards late in the game when the Bulldogs had too many players on the field.

On another occasion halfback Douglas Bruner took a pass from quarterback Bob Abney in the clear and apparently was on his way to a touchdown only to run into one of the officials.

Abney, who was on the list of the victims most of the week, scored two Longview touchdowns while end David Duncan and Sophomore halfback Pete Mobbs accounted for one each and Mike Clark kicked two extra points.

An intercepted pass by end Robert Gillock gave the Lobos the chance to score their first touchdown, which came 11 plays and three 15 yard penalties later. Gillock hauled in Bobby Wyatt's heave and returned it 25 yards but Longview drew a 15 yard clipping penalty to the North Dallas 49.

That penalty and the other two during the drive, however, merely, slowed the Lobos down and certainly didn't do much toward stopping them. Billy Coley picked up a first down in two running plays. Bill Bolger fake a pass and swept left end for 18 yards and another first down. With Harry Moore, Mobbs and Eddy Cooper doing most of the carrying, Longview advanced to the North Dallas two only to have another 15 yard penalty for holding at the four which set the Lobos back to the 19. But Bolger calmly flipped a 19 yard pass to Duncan for a touchdown.

A low snap from center got away on the try for extra point and Abney picked up the ball and tried to circle left end but was stopped short by Charlie Warlick.

Of the eight minutes and 36 seconds played in the first quarter up to that point, the Lobos had held possession for all except three plays in a remarkable exhibition of ball control during which they kept methodically grinding out yardage.

Late in the first quarter McBridge almost got away for a North Dallas touchdown when he circled right end, reversed his field and broke into the opening, racing 42 yards to Longview's 19-yard line before Sophomore guard Jerry Earnhardt ran him down from behind. The Bulldogs managed, with the aid of a five-yard offside penalty against the Lobos, to reach the 11 but the drive bogged down in the face of rugged resistance by the Longview forward wall and the Lobos took over on downs there.

Another intercepted pass set up the second Longview touchdown, which came with three minutes and 50 seconds left in the half. Andy Malone pulled in the pass for the Lobos on the 50-yard line and it took Longview 13 plays with another 15 yard penalty thrown in against them before the Lobos scored.

A pass from Abney to Mobbs was good for 15 yards and another from Abney to Bruner pricked up 14 https://lobohistory.com. Bruner was in the clear but ran into field judge Sam Wood and fell on the North Dallas 21. The Lobos pushed on down to the Bulldogs' four, from where Abney rolled out and with Tommy Matthews leading him circled left end untouched to score. Clark kicked the extra point to give Longview a 13-0 lead at the half.

The third quarter was scoreless, although Longview had one touchdown called back in the final seconds of the period when another 15 yard penalty agains the Lobos dropped up for having an ineligible receiver downfield as Abney passed to Duncan, who was alone in the end zone, after Abney had previously flipped a 21 yard pass to Duncan to move the Lobos to the North Dallas eight.

Late in the third quarter tackle Jimmy Wallace recovered a fumble on the North Dallas 18 that resulted in Longview's third touchdown early in the final period.

A pass from Abney to end Tommy Vestal moved the Lobos to the 12 and there Abney worked the rollout perfectly again as he skirted wide and swept right end to score sanding up. Clark again converted from placement.

Before the Bulldogs had a chance to get their offense back into motion the Longview eleven struck for its fourth and final touchdown. Gresham intercepted a North Dallas pass and returned it 25 yards to the Bulldogs' 18. On the first play after the interception Mobbs took a handoff from quarterback Kim Flint, broke to his right in a dazzling burst of speed and sped the 18 yards into the end zone. Clark's placement kick on the try for extra point sailed barely wide to the left.
