CARTER RIVERSIDE EAGLES TOP LOBOS, 31-19
LONGVIEW - The speedy Carter-Riverside Eagles of Fort Worth turned loose a bevy of fast-steeping backs behind the precision blocking of a hard-charging line to knock Longview from the ranks of the undefeated and untied by trouncing the Lobos here Friday night, 31-19.

There wasn't any fluke about the Carter-Riverside victory as the Eagles came from behind in the last half to take complete command of the game and hand Longview a stout, old-fashioned licking. Carter-Riverside, exhibiting a smashing ground attack, rolled up 25 first downs to 24 for the Lobos, netted 321 yards rushing and another 59 through the air while limiting Longview to a total of 197 yards, 142 yards rushing and another 55 by passing.

The Eagles were sparked by the fine quarterbacking of David Holmes and bristling running of fullback Larry Terrell and halfback Pete Hill. Holmes personally scored one touchdown and passed for another while Hill and Terrell each scored twice and Hill converted the lone extra point for the winners.

Fullback Pete Burks, the leading individual scorer among District 8-AAAA players, halfback Harry Moore and end Rex King chalked up Longview's touchdowns, King's coming on a 16-yard pass from Bolger. Sophomore Bob Abney kicked one extra point for the Lobos.

Longview held a 13-12 lead at the half, but the Eagles roared back in the third quarter to score twice, once as a result of a recovered fumble on the Lobos' 29-yard stripe, and then finished up with a 71-yard scoring drive late in the contest to sew up the decision.

It was Carter-Riverside's second victory in as many games this season while the loss was the first for Longview in three starts.

Abney kicked off to the Carter-Riverside 37. Fields got five at right tackle. Hill was stopped for a two-yard loss at left end. Burks threw Holmes for a nine-yard loss on an attempted pass and when Holmes fumbled, Burks recovered on the Carter-Riverside 17.

Burks got two at right tackle but Longview drew a five-yard penalty for backfield in motion. Thomas was thrown for a five-yard loss at right end by Millican. Burks went 15 around right end on a pitchout. Burks smashed left tackle for three. Moore made three at left guard for a first down on the Carter-Riverside seven. Thomas gained tow at right guard. Moore smashed to the one over left guard. Burks was stopped inches short of the goal line on a drive at right guard. Burs once again was stopped inches short at left tackle and the ball went over to the Eagles on their own one.

Holmes hit center for three on a quarterback sneak. Holmes added two at center. Fields cracked right tackle for a first down on the Carter-Riverside 12. Fields picked up five at right tackle. Hill sliced thorough right tackle for 18 yards and a first down on the Carter-Riverside 35. Terrell got three at left guard. Hill was stopped by Thomas after a three-yard pick-up at left end. Terrell hit right guard for four, but Carter-Riverside drew a five-yard penalty for illegal motion. Holmes passed to HIll for eight yards. On fourth down with a yard to go Fields went for a first down on the Carter-Riverside 48. Terrell picked up three through the middle. Fields gained a yard at right tackle. Holmes' pass to T. Terrell was juggled and dropped. L. Terrell kicked only three yards out of bounds on the Longview 46.

Woods gained two yards at right tackle as the quarter ended, 0-0.

Burks failed to gain at right tackle. Wood passed to Moore for seven yards, but Carter-Riverside drew a 15-yard penalty for roughing to the Carter-Riverside 38. Burks took a pitchout and raced 38 yards behind beautiful blocking untouched into the end zone, but Longview drew a five-yard penalty for offside to the Carter-Riverside 43. Burks went 21 yards on a cutback at left tackle for a first down on the Carter-Riverside 24. Wood got one at right guard. Burks added three at right tackle Wood's pass to Dykes was short. Burks hit the middle on fourth down for eight yards and a first down on the Carter-Riverside 13. Moore drove over right tackle for six to the Eagle's seven. Burks lost one at left tackle. Hill threw Thomas for three-yard loss at the left end. Burks took a pitchout from Wood and fought his way over right tackle from the 11 for a touchdown with eight minutes and 24 seconds left in the second quarter. Hill blocked Abney's kick on the try for extra point, leaving Longview in front, 6-0.

Hill returned Abney's kickoff 21 yards to the Carter-Riverside 36. Hill broke loose over left tackle for 67 yards before he was caught from behind by Pierce on Longview's 12. Fields circled right end for 11 and a first down on the Longview one. Holmes went over center for a touchdown to tie the score. Terrell's kick on the try for extra point was low and wide.

Moore returned a short kickoff to the Longview 42. Cobb gained two at left tackle. Burks rammed one left tackle for six. Moore got one at right guard, but Longview drew a five-yard penalty for backfield in motion. Wood's pass to King was incomplete. Thomas kicked 35 yards to Woodworth, who called for a fair catch on Carter-Riverside's 19. From there the Eagles drew a 15-yard penalty for clipping to their own four.

L. Terrell broke lose for 18 to the Carter-Riverside 22. Holmes was thrown for a seven-yard loss by Buckner and Tutt on an attempted pass. The Eagles drew a five-yard penalty for delaying the game, setting them back to their own nine. Fields gained form at left guards. Fields took a short snap on a punt formation and tried to run but was downed by Dykes on the Carter-Riverside 12.

Wood passed to Thomas to the Eagles' one, but Longview was penalized to the Carter-Riverside 17. Wood picked up one at left tackle. Bolger threw 16 yards to King in the end zone for a touchdown. Abney kicked the extra point to put the Lobos in front, 13-6, with two minutes and 44 seconds left in the half.

Terrell returned Abney's kickoff 19 yards to the Carter-Riverside 29. Fields was nailed by Duncan for no gain at right end. Burks threw Holmes for a nine-yard loss on an attempted pass. Holmes threw a wobbly pass to Woodworth for 31 yards and a first down on the Longview 47. Bolger intercepted Holmes' pass on the 18 and returned it to Longview's 37, but Longview was penalized for clipping to the Lobos' 32. Hill slashed off left tackle for 17 to Longview's 15. Woodworth' pass to Danford was incomplete. The Eagles drew a five-yard penalty for delay of the game to Longview's 20. Holmes passed to Hill for 20 yards and a touchdown with 40 seconds left in the half. L. Terrell's kick on the try for extra point was low and wide, leaving Longview with a 13-12 lead.

Burks returned the kickoff to open the third quarter 20 yards to the Longview 35. Hunter recovered a fumble for the Eagles on Longview's 29.

Fields hit right tackle for seven. Hill went through guard for a first down on the Lobos' 17. L. Terrell added two at right tackle. Hill got eight and a first down on Longview's seven. L. Terrell went through center for a touchdown. L. Terrell's kick again was wide, but Carter-Riverside led 18-13, two minutes and 21 seconds deep into the period.

Burks returned Hill's kickoff 14 yards to Longview's 39. Hunter threw Thomas for a five-yard loss at left end. Cooper slammed right tackle for five. Wood's pass to Dykes was incomplete. Thomas kicked 33 yards to Carter-Riverside's 27.

Field circled right end for seven. Hill gained five at left tackle for a first down on the Eagle's 42. L. Terrell got eight through center. Holmes' pass to T. Terrell was batted away by Bolger. Hill picked up a first down on Longview's 47. Hill rapped center for two yards. L. Terrell added seven. L. Terrell got two at left guard at left tackle. Burks stopped Holmes at center after a yard gain, and a first down on Longview's 38. Hill sliced over tackle for 18 to the Lobos' 18. Holmes gained a yard at right end. L. Terrell blasted left tackle for three. Fields added eight and a first down on the Longview five. Fields went over right tackle to the one, but the Eagles were penalized to the 10 for illegal motion. L. Terrell ripped over right tackle to score from the 10 with two minutes left in the quarter. Hill missed the extra point, leaving Carter-Riverside ahead, 24-13.

Thomas returned the kickoff 15 yards to his own 41. Burks picked up seven at left tackle. Bolger passed to Burks for 10 yards and a first down on the Eagles' 40. Bolger's pass to King was incomplete. Cooper went 16 over right tackle to the Eagles' 24. Moore failed to gain at left guard. Bolger's pass to King was knocked down in the end zone by Hill. Bolger passed to Moore for a first down on the 12 at the end of the quarter.

Burks got four at left tackle. Burks added two more at center. Bolger passed to King for a first down on the Carter-Riverside 2. Moore got one at right guard. Moore failed to gain at the same spot. Cobb was spilled inches short of the gaol line by Woodworth at right end, but Carter-Riverside was offside. Moore went over right tackle for a touchdown with nine minutes and 10 seconds remaining in the game. Abney's kick was wide, leaving Carter-Riverside ahead, 24-19.

Woodworth returned Abney's kickoff 14 yards to the Eagles' 29. Fields skirted right end for 12 yards to Carter-Riverside 42. L. Terrell was stopped by Pierce for no gain. Hill went on a beautiful run, swept left end for 52 yards to Longview's six. Hill cut back over left tackle for a touchdown to boost the Eagles' lead to a 31-19 with seven minutes and 26 seconds left. Hill's kick on the try for conversion was wide, but Longview was offside. This time Hill made his kick good to make the score 31-19 favoring Carter-Riverside.

Moore returned the kickoff to Longview's 43. Burks hit left tackle for two. Bolger slipped through the middle for 27 yards to Carter's 27. Bolger's pass to Cobb was knocked down by Hill. Bolger's pass to Moore was incomplete. Burks picked up one at center. Millican batted down Bolger's fourth down pass and the ball went over to the Eagles on their own 26.

Fields hit right tackle for five. Carter-Riverside drew a five-yard penalty for delay of the game. L. Terrell got eight at left tackle, but Carter-Riverside drew a 15-yard penalty for holding. Woodworth failed to gain at right tackle. L. Terrell also failed at left tackle. L. Terrell pushed 45 yards to Longview's 39.

Bolger's long pass to Moore was incomplete. Bolger failed to connect on a pass to Gillock. Moore swept left end for 11 yards and a first down at midfield. Fields intercepted Wood's pass on the Eagles' 35-yard line.

Hill hit left tackle for six. L. Terrell slipped through tackle for 22 yards to the Lobos' 37. Holmes on a keeper got 10 and a first down. Holmes added three at left guard. Hill hit center for two on the final play of the game.
