LOBOS ROMP PAST WEATHERFORD ELEVEN, 39-6
LONGVIEW - Roaring back from their first defeat of the season last week, the Longview Lobos staged a scintillating offensive display before a crowd of some 5,500 fans here Friday night, beating the Weatherford Kangaroos of District 2AAA, for their third victory in four starts.

The Lobos' offense sputtered for much of the first quarter as they wasted two early scoring chances but when it did start to click it caught fire as the Longview eleven poured six touchdowns across the goal line with a machine-like precision to post their highest scoring output in a single game this season.

Halfback Tony Rothrock and George Stone, the latter seldom used this year until Friday night, each scored two touchdowns for Longview while halfback Horace (the Hoss) Johnson and sophomore fullback Pete Burks added one a'piece. Tackle Murvil Byrd converted three extra points from placement for the Lobos.

The longest touchdown run of the game was an 85-yard rush by Rothrock for Longview's first score in the second quarter. That play also broke the stubborn early resistance seen but eh Kangaroos, who had were stopped on Longview's one-foot line only minutes before.

Just when the visitors lost the ball on down just inches away from pay dirt, they still had Longview backed up in a. Dangerous position only to see the Lobos flash past for a touchdown in a quick stroke which the Kangaroos never recovered from.

After taking over on their own one yard line, the Lobos punched out to their 15. Crawford hit the line for five yards and laterally to Tony Rothrock, who simply outran the Weatherford secondary while his own teammates lined up a solid from to the provide protection that the halfback didn't really need once he broke into the open.

In the second half, Longview's offense began to really roll the Kangaroos, who were outmatched and outclasses as the Lobos cleared their bench and used every play in uniform.

Weatherford made a real fight of it for the first half as Longview left the field at the intermission holding only a 7 to 0 edge but in the final two minutes the Lobos marched up and down the field almost at will in an impressive exhibition to try and wipe out the memories of last weeks jolting loss to Palestine.

Last week, the Lobos lost the ball every time they fumbled it. This week, it was a completely different story and it was Weatherford who mostly fumbled and lost the ball as the alert Lobos pounced on the ball. The Kangaroos suffered the ball eight times and Longview pounced on it no less than five times.

The winners amassed a net gain of (??) yards for the game, all but (??) yards of it by rushing, and recorded 16 first downs to nine for Weatherford.

The Kangaroos weren't able to score until the very last play of the game on a 32-yard pass from Johnson to Dickey when the defensive group of the Lobos was fill with reserved.

Longview had two scoring opportunities in the first quarter but were unable to cash in on either of them as the Kangaroos had a surprisingly stiff defensive hold for downs on both drives.

The Lobos, who must have set some sort of record last week when they fumbled 11 times and lost the ball eight times in losing to Palestine, had a fumble fall their way for a chance on the first play of the game. End Rex King and sophomore tackle Gene Pierce pounced on a loose ball on Weatherford's 31 for Longview's first scoring chance.

Longview picked up a first on line smashed by halfback Tony Rothrock and fullback Dub Thomas but Morris Stroud, Weatherford halfback, intercepted Jerry Crawford's pass on the Kangaroos' 11-yard line to stop the drive. Crawford tried his pass when he was tackled behind the line and the erring aerial landed in Stroud's arms almost at the line of scrimmage.

Late in the first period the Lobos threatened again. They took a punt on their own 45-yard stripe and with the aid of a pass from Crawford to halfback Horace Johnson for 11 yards moved down to Weatherford's 23 before Thomas was stopped just short of a first down on a fourth down smash into the line.

Having fought off two Longview threats successfully, the Kangaroos launched a 68-yard march of their own that barely fell short of a touchdown early in the second quarter. The visitors used 14 plays to reach Longview's nine-yard line but there the Lobos put on the first of two fine defensive stands in the opening half to thwart Weatherford. Fullback Ned Dickey ripped off a 23-yard drive and appeared headed for a touchdown before Rothrock caught him from behind.

Weatherford's first threat fizzled out when quarterback John Johnson's fourth down pass was batted away in the end zone by Rothrock.

Two plays later, however, the Kangaroos were right back on Longview's goal line when Bill Thomas recovered a fumble on the Lobos' 10. Then Longview put on a rousing goal line stand that stopped Weatherford just inches short of pay dirt. Four smashes at the line failed to put the Kangaroos across and the ball went over on downs to the Lobos on their own one-foot line.

From there the Lobos turned loose a lightning offense that went the length of the field in six plays for a touchdown with 85 yards of the distance coming on one swift play with Rothrock taking a lateral from Crawford and racing 85 yards into the end zone. Co-captain Murvil Byrd place-kicked the extra point to give Longview a lead of 7-0 with four minutes and 25 seconds left to play in the second period.

A veritable convoy of blockers accompanied Rothrock the last 65 yards of his sizzling run and no less than six of his teammates escorted him across the goal line with no Weatherford player even within shouting distance.

In the third quarter the Lobos really began to roll and struck for their next touchdown the second time they gained possession fo the ball in that period. The touchdown was set up when halfback Robert (Boots) Cashell returned a punt 50 yards down the sidelines to Weatherford's 18 before he was finally knocked out of bounds by Stroud. The Kangaroos drew a five-yard penalty for offside and Johnson and Crawford gave Longview a first down on the one, from where Johnson plowed over right guard to score. Byrd's placement kick on the try for a point was wide.

Linebacker Tommy Rodriguez intercepted a pass and returned it 12 yards to Longview's 42 to start the Lobos toward their third touchdown. Three plays after the interception Crawford hit tackle for five yards and laterally to Rothrock who went 41 more to score, again behind great blocking, with the play covering 46 yards. Byrd converted from placement and Longview's lead mounted to 20-0 with five minutes and seven seconds left in the third quarter.

Burks personally engineered Longview's third touchdown of the quarter and fourth of the game late in the period when he intercepted a pass on his own 10. The sophomore fullback broke over left tackle for 10 yards, but a 15-yard holding penalty later set the Lobos back to their own 33. Burks needed just two plays to score from there. He blasted over right tackle for 24 yards and on the next play took a shovel pass from Crawford, broke over left tackle and raced 43 yards into the end zone with 51 seconds remaining to play in the third quarter. Byrd booted the extra point to put Longview in front at the close of the period, 27-0.

End Curtis Lemmonds recovered a fumble on Weeatherford's 38-yard stripe early in the fourth quarter to set the stage for Longview's fifth touchdown. With the aid of some sharp running by Burks and sophomore halfback Harry Moore, the Lobos drove to the visitors' 10-yard line, where George Stone took a lateral from Crawford and raced over left tackle to score. J. Johnson blocked Byrd's kick on the try for extra point.

End Tommie Vestal covered still another fumble by the Kangaroos on Weatherford's 36-yard stripe to give the Lobos the opportunity for their sixth touchdown, which they promptly scored when Stone took a pitchout, swept to the left, cut back through the line, reversed his field and scampered 31 yards into the end zone in a sparkling run. The stands gave Stone a rousing ovation when he was removed from the game. Byrd's kick on the try for extra point was wide, leaving Longview with a 39-0 margin and only three and a half minutes left in the game.

An intercepted pass led to Weatherford's lone touchdown just before time ran out. Lynn Dobbins intercepted a Longview aerial and returned it to the Lobos' 39. Two plays later fullback Johnson passed 32 yards to fullback Ned Dickey for a touchdown on the last play fo the game with the final buzzer sounding when Dickey crossed the goal line.

Dobbins was stopped at right end by guard Chuck Wood on an attempt to run the extra point across after the snap from center was fumble.
