LOBOS DEFEAT ARKANSAS HIGH FOR SECOND WIN
TEXARKANA - The hard-running Longview Lobos chalked up their second straight impressive victory of the young football season by turning loose a blistering ground attack on wet and soggy Burham Field here Friday night to batter the Arkansas High Razorbacks into their first defeat after two wins in a row, 39 to 6.

Dazzling running by halfbacks Tony Rothrock and Horace Johnson and Sophomore fullback Pete Burks plus some sour hearted defensive play but the Longview forward wall sparked the Lobos to victory in a contest that would have turned into a complete rout had not coach Catfish Smith cleared his bench in the third quarter and used every player he had in uniform during the last half.

Even the Sophomore-studded eleven used by Longview almost exclusively in the final two periods gave good account of itself as the Lobos scored once in the third quarter and chalked up two more touchdowns in the final period.

Rothrock scored two of Longview's touchdowns while Burks, Johnson, Curtis Lemmonds and Boots Cashell contributed one each. Murvil Byrd converted twice from placement and Cashell once for Longview's extra point.

The Lobos' crushing ground attack rolled up 326 yards rushing alone and registered 17 first downs to 8 for Arkansas High. The Razorbacks made only one first down in the entire last half in the face of the fierce charging of the forward wall of the Lobos and they had a net of just 64 yards rushing.

Burks turned in the longest run of the game to score Longview's first touchdown late in the first quarter when he took a handoff, broke through the Arkansas High line and raced 72 yards into the end zone.

Longview drew 90 yards in penalties to only 10 yards for Arkansas, but the penalties didn't even slow down the crushing Longview attack which has now piled up 620 yards rushing in the first two games of the season.

Chuck Wood, scrapping little 156-pound Longview guard, suffered a leg injury during the Lobos' drive for their second touchdown in the second period and was carried front eh field. The extend of his injury had not been determined late Friday night.

The Razorbacks lost no time in getting a scoring opportunity when they recovered a Longview fumble on the Arkansas 45 yard line on the opening kickoff. They picked up one first down but the Lobos immediately stiffened their defense and Arkansas was forced to punt with Dillard Blue's kick going out of bounds on the Lobo six.

The first time Longview received the ball the Lobos started off in impressive fashion and free led off two first downs before two 15-yard penalties for holding and clipping set them back to their own 9, and finally they had to kick.

Longview struck for the first touchdown of the game with Sophomore fullback Pete Burks blazing his way 72 yards to pay dirt with only ten seconds remaining in the first quarter. After Blue kicked out of bounds not he Longview 28, Burks took a handoff from quarterback Jerry Crawford and blasted his way over left tackle and went all the way for a touchdown.

John Tumphrey, who trailed Burks the last 30 yards on his touchdown run, made a last desperate leap in an attempt to catch him at the goal line but failed. Cashell placekicked the extra point to put Longview in front 7 to 0 at the end of the quarter.

Arkansas High scored its lone touchdown early in the second period to cut Longview's lead to 7-6. Taking the kickoff after Longview's first quarter touchdown, the Razorbacks marched 65 yards in 13 plays to score. A 10-yard romp by Billy Sturgeon, a 15-yard pass from Sturgeon to Jimmy Jones and a 15-yard scamper helped Arkansas reached the Longview 1, from where Sturgeon went over center for the touchdown. Edward Harrison's kick on the try for extra point was wide.

The Razorback touchdown, however, served only to put the Lobos on the warpath and they stormed 68 yards in just five plays after taking the ensuing kickoff to score their second touchdown.

Halfback Tony Rothrock started the drive going with a 24-yard blast one right tackle and halfback Horace Johnson went 20 yards more around left end to reach the Razorback 12-yard stripe. From there Rothrock took a handoff from Crawford and ripped over left guard standing up for a touchdown. Cashell's kick on the extra point attempt was wide.

A blocked punt led to Longview's third touchdown just three plays before the half ended. End Aaron Dykes smashed through the Arkansas forward wall to block Blue's kick and recovered it on the Razorbacks 10-yard stripe. With less than a minute to play in the second period, Wood picked up a yard at right tackle and Harry Moore added 8 at the left side to reach the 2, and Rothrock went over left guard for the score.

Cashell's kick was wide, leaving Longview with a 19-6 edge at the half.

Longview went 63 yards for its fourth touchdown early in the third quarter. With Rothrock, Johnson and Burks ripping through the Razorback's line, the Lobos needed only 7 plays to reach the Arkansas 2, and Johnson hit right tackle from there to score. Tackle Murvil Byrd booted the extra point to put Longview ahead at the close of the third period, 26 to 6.

The Lobos finished up with two touchdowns in the final quarter. End Tommy Rodriquez set up Longview's first tally in the fourth when he recovered a fumble on Arkansas High's 20. Rothrock picked up 8 yards at tackle and then Crawford fired a 12-yard pass to end Curtis Lemmonds for a touchdown. Byrd again booted the extra point from placement to stretch Longview's lead to 33 to 6.

Just before the end of the contest, the Lobos went 57 yards for still another touchdown. Taking a kick on their own 43 the Lobos, with the aid of an 18-yard romp around end by Moore and another for 13 yards by Burks, reached the Arkansas 10 but there Longview drew a 5-yard penalty for backfield in motion to set the Lobos back to the Razorbacks' 15. At that point Sophomore quarterback Bill Bolger calmly fired a touchdown pass to Boots Cashell in the end zone.

Rothrock fumbled the snap from center on the try of extra point and was swarmed when he tried to run the ball.
