LOBOS WIN DISTRICT OPENER OVER MOUNT PLEASANT
LONGVIEW - The Longview Lobos scored a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage here Friday night and then went on to grind out a methodical 27 to 6 victory over the Mount Pleasant Tigers in the opening District 4-AAA game of the season for both teams.

Little Tony Rothrock, 145-pound left halfback of the Lobos, scored three touchdowns and quarterback Bobby Randel one with Randel converting three times from placement. Longview kept the upper hand all the way, although the Lobos were not as flashy as they had appeared in four previous starts.

The locals stayed on the ground almost exclusively as they gained 270 yards from scrimmage, all but 28 of it by rushing. Longview attempted only nine passes and completed but two of them.

The airtight defense of the Lobos limited Mount Pleasant in a net gain of 71 yards by rushing, although the Tigers were highly successful through the air as they completed six out of 11 passes to make a total of 18 completions against Longview in the last two games.

Rothrock stunned the Tigers on the first play after the opening kickoff when he took a handoff from Randel, broke over right tackle, and raced 53 yards into the end zone. The fleet little halfback was almost stopped at the line of scrimmage, but regained his balance and sped for a touchdown to give Longview a 6 to 0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Lobos had another scoring opportunity a few minutes later when they recovered a fumble on Mount Pleasant's 29-yard stripe, but failed to cash in on it. Fullback Pat Sisk picked up three yards at right tackle, but halfback Roy Taylor failed to gain on a try at the same spot and Randel lost five yards on an attempted pass. A fourth down pass from Randel to Rothrock was good for 10 yards, but lacked two yards of gaining a first down and the ball went over to the Tigers on their 21.

Late in the first quarter, Randel got off a beautiful punt that set the Tigers back in a hole and led to Longview's second touchdown. The Longview quarterback boomed a high kick toward the corner and it rolled out of bounds on Mount Pleasant's one-yard line just before hitting the out of bounds flag.

The Tigers could gain only two yards in two plays and kicked out on their own 30, from where the Lobos drove to their second touchdown early in the second quarter. With Randel and Rothrock doing most of the carrying, Longview picked up a first down on the 19 and in two tries Rothrock got 11 yards and another first down on the eight. Taylor and Randel each added two yards through the line and Rothrock skirted right end for a first down on the one-foot line, from where Randel went over center to score. Randel converted to put Longview ahead at the half, 13 to 0.

The Lobos made another mild scoring threat midway through the second quarter, but the drive fizzled out on Mount Pleasant's 25.

A few plays later, the Tigers made their first scoring gesture of the evening when they recovered a fumble on Longview's 30 yard line. After end David Heimer grabbed the fumble, Joe Mack Harbour hit tackle for seven yards and quarterback Charles Wright passed nine yards to end Gerald Greeney for a first down on Longview's 14. Bill Lyles drove to the 10 with only 42 seconds left in the half, but Rothrock halted Harbour with only a yard gain on an attempted end sweep and line back Tommy Rodriguez recovered a fumble for the Lobos on his eight-yard line to halt the threat.

Joe Collier and Murvill Byrd pounced on a Mount Pleasant fumble on Longview's 35-yard line late in the third period and the Lobos needed only six plays to drive from there for a touchdown, which Rothrock scored on the final play of the period with a 20-yard blast over left tackle after taking a pitchout from Randel. No less than five Mount Pleasant players got their hands on Rothrock, but he shook them off and kept driving to make pay-dirt. Randel again converted to put Longview in front 20 to 0.

Greeney recovered a fumble on Longview's 31-yard line to set the stage for Mount Pleasant's only touchdown early in the fourth quarter. A 28-yard run around left end by Sam (?) after he faded a pass downfield to find a receiver to give Mount Pleasant a first down on Longview's 3 and from there Wright handed off to Heimer for the score. Durant's placement on the extra point was wide.

The Lobos drove 52 yards on their final touchdown drive with just two minutes of play left with Rothrock going over center from the even, after which Randel put over his third straight conversion to end the scoring.
