LOBOS USE STOUT DEFENSE TO TOP DRAGONS, 13-6
LONGVIEW - Combining a sharp running attack with an aerial game that clicked hone it was needed, the Longview Lobos struck quickly for touchdowns the first two times they gained possession fo the ball and then hung on grimly to defeat the Nacogdoches Dragons in a District 4-AAA game here Friday night, 13 to 6.

The victory allowed Longview to climb past Nacogdoches into fourth place in the conference standings with two wins and two losses, while the defeat dropped the Dragons to fifth with one decision, two defeats and a tie.

The contest started out as if the two elevens intended to turn it into a wide-open offense battle by scoring all three of the game's touchdowns before the second quarter was two minutes old but from there on it was a stubborn defensive battle right down to the final whistle.

The Lobos turned in two rousing goal line stands in the first three minutes of the third period after fumbles put them back in dangerous holes, but the stout Longview defense was equal to the occasion both times and rose up to halt the threats.

Longview jumped into a 13 to 0 lead at the end of the first quarter and apparently had the visitors on the run before the Nacogdoches eleven found itself and pressed the Lobos closely over the remainder of the distance.

It took the Lobos just 12 plays to drive 56 yards for a touchdown the first time they got the ball. With quarterback George Myers, halfback Bill Ferguson and fullback Robert Bayliss carrying the brunt of the attack behind the crisp blocking of the Longview forward wall, the Lobos smashed their way from their own 44 to the Nacogdoches one in a sustained drive and from there Myers plunged over center to score. Myers' placement kick was wide, leaving Longview in front 6 to 0.

The Longview eleven needed only six plays to travel 55 yards for its second touchdown a few minutes later with most of the distance being eaten up on a beautiful 45-yard scoring pass from Myers to end Walter Uhlenhoff.

Myers fired a 30-yard aerial to Uhlenhoff, who snared the ball over his shoulder on the Nacogdoches 15 and sprinted across untouched. Myers converted the extra point from placement to put Longview ahead at the end of the first quarter, 13 to 0.

An interference penalty on a 28-yard pass from Sonny Hatton to Terry Morris gave Nacogdoches a first down on Longview's 38-yard stripe and led to the Dragons' only touchdown early in the second quarter. A pass from Hatton to James moved the ball down to Longview's 16 and from here Hatton swept left end to score standing up. Glynn Chancellor missed the extra point, the second time in 13 attempts he has failed to convert.

Midway in the second quarter, the Lobos threatened again when they drove 54 yards to the Nacogdoches 15, but tackle Lynn Brown of the Dragons recovered a Longview fumble to halt the drive.

Still later in the period the Lobos made two successive scoring bids, only to se both of them nullified by penalties. A 39-yard pass from Myers to Ferguson reached the Nacogdoches 11, but offsetting penalties dubbed out the gain. On the very next play Myers fired another pass to Jim Noble on the Nacogdoches 10, but that one was also wiped out by a backfield in motion penalty.

Early in the third quarter the Dragons had a golden opportunity when Brown recovered another fumble on Longview's 22, but Nacogdoches could gain only four yards in four plays in the face of Longview's iron-clad defense and the Lobos took over on their own 18.

Four plays later Duke Brasellton recovered another fumble for the Dragons Longview's 25 and again the Lobos made a brilliant goal line stand to hold the Nacogdoches eleven for downs and gain possession on their own 16.

Still another Nacogdoches threat was stopped by the sensational Longview defense in the fourth quarter when the Dragons lacked less than a foot of making a first down on fourth down and the Lobos took over the ball on their own 21.

A pair of stalwart linemen, one from each team, took defensive honors for the night. End Allen Garrard of Nacogdoches turned in a brilliant performance for the losers, while Dan Frier, big Longview tackle, sparked the rugged Longview defense that bottled up the Dragons almost every time they had a scoring opportunity.

Charles Boudreaux, 171-pound Longview guard, was injured on the opening kickoff and was carried from the field. He appeared to have a painful knee injury, but the exact extent of the injury had not been determined after rate game. Boudreaux was scheduled to underdog a medical examination and x-rays of the injured knee Saturday.
