LOBOS WHIP PALESTINE FOR FIRST WIN, 27-20
LONGVIEW - The Longview Lobos, apparently deciding that the business of getting kicked around had gone just about far enough, played the Palestine Wildcats off their feet here Friday night to win a sparkling 27-20 victory and drop the 'Cats from fourth place in the late AAA rankings to heaven only knows where.

It was George Myers, the passing pitching T-quarterback of the victory-hungry Wolves, who chunked them into the win column in one of the great individual performance seen here since the days when Dandy Dirk Miller showed the big Green No. 23 on his back to the opposition in the 1937 campaign.

All Myers did was to throw 36 passes and complete 31 of them for the amazing total of 300 yards and shepherd the Green and White to a total of 30 first downs. Two or three other passes were hung on a peg for receivers who just couldn't manage to hold onto them, but when the chips were down the receivers grabbed them and hung on.

The Wildcats scored first, but it took a fumble by the jittery Wolves to set it up. After recovering one fumble in the first series of downs, the Lobos repeated on a fourth down punt try and the ball went to the 'Cats on the Lobo 29. Louis Farris, Jack Joyce and John Ousley took turns smashing the Lobo midriff from a powerful single wing to carry to the nine, from where Joyce cracked right guard for nine and a touchdown. Bob Smith converted for a 7-0 lead.

Things were according to Hoyte up to their point but Myers took charge then. Palestine drew a 15-yard penalty on a fourth down Lobo punt, giving the Wolves a first on the Palestine 45. In five plays Myers hit Bill Ferguson for 11 and Jim Noble for 13 and then 11 to carry it to the six. Three plays later Ferguson cracked the middle for a touchdown and Myers converted to tie it at 7-all.

With less than three minutes left in the half, Longview racked up one touchdown and came within one foot or one second take your choice, of scoring another. The first was the result of a 57-yard drive, with Myers passing to Uhlenhoff in the end zone for what should have been the score. Interference was ruled, giving the ball to the Lobos on the one. Myers sneaked over for the score and then converted. The Wolves led 14-7 at halftime, but it could have been even worse.

Taking a kick on their own 24, the Lobos rode the good right arm of Myers to the one-foot line on a 25-yard pitch to Noble, a 10-yarder to the same receivers, and then quick pitches of 14 and 30 yards to Ferguson. The last one carried to the one-foot line and the clock ran out before Longview could call time and stop the clock.

In the third , the Wolves drove 58 yards to score, with Myers sneaking one from the one-foot line for the tally. He completed tosses for 16 and 14 in the drive and then taking a pitchout carried the ball like a loaf of bread for another 13 on his own. He missed the kick for a 20-7.

A blocked punt gave the 'Cats their second touchdown. With the count fourth down and 40 yards to go, Myers had a punt batted back to his face and the 'Cats converted it on the Lobo four. Joyce, on second down, hit right tackle and went over. Ousley missed the try and it was 20-13.

Uhlenhoff returned the succeeding kickoff to the Lobo 35 and Myers got his arms hot again. He hit Uhlenhoff with a 19-yard and Gerald Moore took a handoff down the middle for another 25. Moore recovered his own fumble for a one-yard gain to the 20 as the quarter ended and on the first play of the fourth quarter, Myers lobbed one to Robert Bayliss standing in the end zone for a touchdown. Myers' conversion put the Wolves out in front 27-13.

But the Wildcats were not through. This time they didn't need a break to score. Longview kicked off and Joyce returned it to the Palestine 42. On the first play from scrimmage, Joyce passed 20 yards to Ousley and that fleet-footed gentlemen outran the Lobo defenders for the remaining 38 yards to score. Bob Smith converted and it was 27-20.
