BILL BORUM SPARKS DENISON TO WIN OVER LOBOS, 28-14
LONGVIEW - The Denison Yellowjackets rode the sling-shot passing and dazzling running of quarterback Bill Borum to a 28-14 victory over Longview here Friday night in the opening home game of the season for the Lobos.

Borum was practically the entire offensive show for the Yellowjackets as he personally scored two touchdowns, passed for another and set up a fourth with a beautiful quick kick that pushed the Lobos back deep into their own territory and finished off his brilliant performance by place-kicking the extra points after all four Denison touchdowns.

It was the second straight defeat for the Lobos, who lost their opener a week earlier to Class AAAA Tyler 14-0, while the win was the first for the Yellowjackets, who dropped their first start of the campaign to Cleburne 26-14.

Denison lost no time by scoring the second time the Yellowjackets gained possession of the ball. After receiving the opening kickoff, Denison fumbled and end Jim Noble, who turned in an outstanding performance for the Lobos, recovered on the Yellowjackets' 26-yard stripe. Longview pushed down to the 15, but Borum intercepted a pass on Denison's 10 to halt the threat.

Four plays later Borum started wide to the left, cut back over tackle and raced 68 yards for a touchdown. He added the extra point from placement to put the Yellowjackets in front 7-0.

Only a stubborn goal line stand late in the second period prevented a second Denison touchdown before the first quarter was over. Bill Graves intercepted a pas and returned it 25 yards to Longview's five-yard stripe, but the Lobos held and on fourth down John Boyd, Longview end, smeared Franklin Lewis on the nine-yard stripe as the Lobos took over.

Early in the second quarter Borum quick-kicked 52 yards dead on the Longview three. Trying to run the ball out, the Lobos fumbled and tackle Bruce Hibbitt recovered on the Longview one. The Lobos held for one play, but then Jim Gorman smacked left guard to score and Borum converted to put the Yellowjackets in front 14-0.

The Lobos scored their first touchdown midway through the second quarter after ned David Ash recovered a fumble on Denison's 32-yard stripe. On the next play quarterback Bobby Randall fired a pass to Noble, who took the ball on the goal line and smashed on into the end zone. George Myers kicked the extra point to whittle Denison's margin to 14-7.

The Yellowjackets, however, required only four plays to drive 70 yards for their third touchdown. They took the kickoff after Longview's touchdown and after Borum picked up 30 yards on two pass completions, he faked a pass and scampered 35 yards over right tackle to pay dirt. Borum converted again from placement to put Denison out in front at the half, 21-7.

Midway in the third quarter the Lobos struck for their second touchdown. Bill Ferguson returned Borum's punt 28 yards to Denison's 46 to set the scoring drive in motion. A pair of passes from Randall to Noble and Walter Uhlenhoff accounted for 34 yards and line smashes by Gerald Moore and Randall picked up nine more to reach Denison's three.

From there, Moore took a handoff from Randall and broke over left guard standing up to core. Myers again converted leaving Denison in front 21-14.

After the next kickoff, however, the Yellowjackets used only five plays to score again on a 64-yard drive. Borum passed to Gorman for 23 yards and then hit the same target for 14 and 12 more to reach Longview's 13. Borum then fired another pass for 13 yards to Jim Holt in the end zone for Denison's fourth touchdown and Borum converted again.

The Yellowjackets made one other scoring threat midway in the fourth period when they reached Longview's 16-yard stripe, but Danny Chadwick intercepted Jimmy Edgeit's pass on the 15 to halt the drive.

The Lobos were forced to rely mainly on a passing game as their running attack was kept bottled up most of the way by the Yellowjackets. Randall, who alternated with Myers at quarterback, completed eight passes in 20 attempts for Longview.

Longview threw a total of 32 passes while running 29 offensive plays on the ground and picked up a net of only 77 yards rushing.

The Lobos compiled a total net yardage of 248 yards, 171 of which came by passing. Of Longview's 32 passes, the Lobos completed 11, while 17 were incomplete and four intercepted.

Denison, on the other hand, amassed a total of 338 net yards almost equally dived between the passing and rushing. The Yellowjackets gained 166 net yards rushing and 172 through the air.

The visitors threw 14 passes and completed nine of them, three were incomplete and two were intercepted.

Borum compiled a perfect passing record in the game, turning to the air 11 times, completing all nine of the Yellowjackets' aerials which hit their mark. He had no passes intercepted and his other two attempts fell incomplete.

Oddly enough, Longview ended up with one more first down than Denison, 17 to 16, but the Yellowjackets compiled most damage during their scoring drives which counted heavily.

Borum netted 107 yards rushing in addition to his 171 through the air to give him a net gain of 278 yards for the day as he personally accounted for 60 percent of Denison's total yard in a sensational offensive performance.
