MULLIKIN, MOORE SPARK CASCADE OF TOUCHDOWNS
LONGVIEW - Marshall trained its big guns on Longview Thanksgiving afternoon and methodically blasted out a 58-7 triumph.

The Mavericks toyed with the Lobos through the first quarter, wheeled out their heavy artillery in the second, then let out a broadside in the third stanza, winding up the bombardment with grape shot in the fourth.

Once the Mav Machine clicked, it boomed out. Marshall rolled up 307 yards on the ground, and completed six out of 11 passes for another 178 yards. They scorched out 29 first downs just for good measure.

Keats Mullikin scored two touchdowns and threw three passes for another 18 points. Jimmy Moore was on the receiving end of two scoring aerials and rammed over a third on the ground.

Moore and Jerry Strickland stopped the Longview air game, with Strickland making a complete nuisance of himself by intercepting two passes, one for a touchdown and the second setting up a six pointer.

Marshall sputtered around in the early minutes, but toward the end of the first quarter struck suddenness. Longview's George Meyers completed a pass to Don Ferguson, but the ball popped out of the receiver's hands and right into the mitts of Ronald Gunter for a fumble recovery on the Lobo 46. Mullikin rated back and connected with Jimmy Moore for 6 yards and a touchdown.

Longview hopped on a Moore fumble a few minutes later, recovering it on the Marshall 14. It took the Lobos six plays to eat up the remaining distance with Gerald Moore going over right guard from the 2.

The Mavs waited until late in the second quarter to break the deadlock. They drove 52 yards, with Kenneth Duncan wheeling off 27 on a run through the line. Mullikin bounced over from the 3.

Exactly 38 seconds later Marshall scored again. Longview fumbled the kickoff and Leroy Van Dyke recovered on the Longview 35. Two passes by Mullikin fell incomplete, then a third hit Varner for a touchdown.

The second half went thusly (take your pick):

1. The Mavs took the kickoff and in six plays covered 76 yards. Passes from Moore to Sorenson and Duncan to Varner were good for 44 yards. Mullikin went over on a naked keep from 5 yards out.

2. The next time Marshall handled the ball they were off again. At 4:56 Moore crashed over from the one-foot line following a 49-yard thrust.

3. A minute an a half later Strickland intercepted a Meyers pass and sailed 63 yard for six points.

4. Still another minute later Strickland snagged another pass, and went over on a 44-yard sprint but a clipping penalty set the Mavs back to the Lobo 24. Two plays later Tommy Moore found daylight for a six-yard run across the goal line.

5. Unable to stand the suspense any longer, Bob Bartlett got into the act late in the fourth quarter. He got away on a quarterback sneak for 10 yards.

6. Ronald Gunter intercepted a pass a few plays later on the Lobo 46. On the next play, Mullikin pitched to James Moore for a 46-yard touchdown.
