MARSHALL SURGES PAST LOBOS, 14-7, TO GRAB DISTRICT
MARSHALL - The Marshall Mavericks used two explosive bursts, one on the first play of the second quarter, and one in the fourth, to beat Longview's Lobos for the District 4-AAA championship, 14 to 7, here Thursday afternoon.

Coach Charlie Flowers' Cinderella Mavs, who started the season with only three regulars and five more letter men and lost four of their first five gams, used a pass interception by linebacker Frank Patterson to set up their first score.

Patterson returned 21 yards to the Longview 14-yard line, and six plays later, as the second period. Quarterback C. L. Snow sneaked over from the 1 for the score. Tackle George Ives kicked his first of two extra points.

Coach Swede Dees' Lobos, who had previously romped to eight victories in nine games after being given little chance to go far this year, took the second half kickoff and roared back to tie up, 7 to 7.

L.T. Mobbs, Longview's kick runback specialist, took the kickoff, returned it 43 yards, then lateraled off to Shibly Horaney, who got 11 more to the Marshall 34-yard line.

Breaking into a spread formation that completely baffled the Mav defense, Jerry Matthews completed three straight passes to move the ball to the 2, and Dick Nash carried the ball over. Claude Pliler kicked the point.

Matthews, who threw thirty-four passes for Longview and completed fourteen for 147 yards, kept the Mavs locked back until the fourth period.

Then halfback Keats Mullikin returned a Longview punt 23 yards to his own 40. The Mavs moved to the Lobo 46 and Snow passed to halfback Jimmy Moore, who had moved behind the Longview defender on the 23-yard line. Moore gathered in the toss and scooted across with the winning touchdown.
