MOBBS SPARKLES AS LONGVIEW DOWNS KILGORE, 33-6
LONGVIEW - Pushing across two touchdowns in the opening period before coasting in from there to win about as they pleased, coach Side Dee's ever-surprising Longview Lobos painted their tie for first place in the District 4-AAA race by beating coach M.H. Hopson's Kilgore Bulldogs at Lobo Stadium here Friday night before a chilled crowd of 3,5000 fans, 33-6.

It was the second conference win in as many outings for the Lobos while the defeat was the first for Kilgore in the same district starts.

Longview scored before the game was two minutes old when L.T. Mobbs, speedy safety man of the Lobos, turned in a sizzling-yard punt return for a touchdown and except for a brief recovery by Kilgore in the third period, the Bulldogs were never able to make a contest of it.

The game was marked by long returns by both teams, although the Lobos packed theirs into scoring rushes to overwhelm the stubborn visitors.

After grabbing a 14-0 lead in the opening period, the locals loaded up considerably to concentrate on defense and when Kilgore rushed across its only touchdown in the third quarter with the aid of a fumble deep in Longview territory, the Lobos immediately went back to work again and slammed over more touchdowns to win going away.

Statistically, the game was much closer than the score indicted, although Longview was never in any serious danger. The Lobos compiled 16 first downs to 13 for Kilgore and had a total net gain of 349 to 252 for the Bulldogs.

The punt returns of Mobbs and quarterback Jerry Matthews kept Kilgore back in its own territory throughout much of the game. The three times the Bulldogs punted in, Mobbs and Matthews returned the ball for a total of 158 yards.

Longview kicked off to open the game and after three plays failed to gain a first down. Quarterback John Jennings kicked to Longview, Mobbs gathered in the punt on his own 25-yard line and, with the aid of a key block by Shibley Horaney at the 50, raced back 75 yards for the first touchdown of the game. End Claude Pliler split the uprights with a placement kick for the extra point to give Longview a 70 lead.

The next time the Lobos got the ball they pushed down to Kilgore's 11-yard line, but Jon White, Kilgore tackle, recovered a fumble to halt what appeared to be a certain Longview touchdown drive.

Late in the opening quarter Mobbs scampered back 54 yards with a punt to set up the second touchdown for the Lobos. Aided by a pass from Matthews to end Jerry Barnes, who made a beautiful catch to Kilgore's 10-yard stripe, Longview pushed down to the one and Dick Nash pounced over right guard to score. Pliler again booted the extra point and Longview led at the end fo the first period, 14-0.

The Bulldogs made their first serious scoring threat midway in the second quarter when, with Patrick Foster reeling off 33 yards on an off-tackle jaunt, they reached Longview's four-yard stripe, but big Bobby Blakeley recovered a fumble at that point to halt the drive and the half ended 14-0.

Kilgore's lone touchdown came midway in the third period when end Everett Mayo recovered a fumble on Longview's nine-yard stripe and a few minutes later Gayle Patrick skipped over left tackle to score from the five. Jennings' placement kick on the try for extra point was wide and low.

The Lobos roared back 65 yards for their third touchdown late in the third quarter after David Gary recovered a Kilgore fumble on Longview's 32-yard line.

A nifty 44-yard pass from Matthews to Martin (Jeep) Reynolds put Longview in scoring position and Horaney went over right guard from the one for the touchdown. Pliler added his third straight extra point by placement to give Longview a 21-6 margin at the end of the third period.

Gary recovered another Kilgore fumble on Longview's 41-yard line to set the stage for the fourth Lobo touchdown, which was scored by Horaney on a plunge over center from the two. Horaney's placement kick on the try for extra point was low.

The Bulldogs were driving toward a second touchdown late in the game when the tide suddenly turned as Horaney recovered a Kilgore fumble on Longview's seven-yard line.

Then, with lightning-like suddenness, the Lobos Brooke loose for their final touchdown. Nash took a pitchout from Matthews and blazed 74 yards around right end to Kilgore's seven. Matthews fired a pass to Pliler on the one and Matthews cracked right tackle to score. The Lobos needed only five plays to travel 93 yards. Horaney's kickoff on the attempt at conversion was low.
