LONGVIEW CRUSHES PREVIOUSLY UNBEATEN CLEBURNE
LONGVIEW - The fantasy of Cleburne's heralded defense was buried under a seven-touchdown avalanche in the billowing dust of Lobo Stadium here Friday night as Coach Swede Dees' incredibly Longview eleven staged an awesome demonstration of offensive power to crush the Yellowjackets, 43-13.

Cleburne, highly-rated because of a spotless record and a stout defense that allowed the opposition a season total of only six points in three previous starts, was never able to make a game of it as the Lobos unleashed a blistering attack before the 5,300 fans had even settled in their seats and by the time the first quarter was over the contest had become a complete rout.

Coach Dees cleared the Longview bench in the second quarter and kept all available reserves pouring in to the clash throughout the remainder of the contest and although the tempo of their attack sometimes slowed down afar that, the Lobos continued a surge for one touchdown after another almost at will against the bewildered visitors.

It was the first defeat of the campaign for Cleburne while the victory was the fourth straight for Longview and kept the Lobos in the rapidly-dwindling ranks of the state's unbeaten and untied elevens.

The Yellowjackets were stunned by the tremendous impact of Longview's opening blast in the first few minutes of play and were never able to recover.

The Lobos needed only four plays to storm 83 yards for the first touchdown of the game after taking the opening kickoff and the next time they got the ball they required but five plays to drive 28 yards for another touchdown. Thus it took Longview a total of nine plays and slightly more than five minutes to score twice as many points as the Yellowjackets had yielded in their three earlier games combined.

As a matter of fact, the Lobos used only 14 plays to score four touchdowns in the first quarter in a show of power that was almost awe-inspiring.

The Longview eleven crushed the District 2-AAA representatives so quickly and so convincingly that the packed stands just sat in open-mouthed wonderment, almost unable to believe what they were seeing.

Dick Nash and Jerry Matthews scored two touchdowns each and Sibley Horaney and L.T. Mobbs one a'piece and even big Dean Hesse, a tackle, joined in the outburst by registering a touchdown of his own to complete the debacle.

On one occasion Boggs Moore, reserve Longview center, added insult to injury by stealing the ball from Bill Leonard, Cleburne back and almost shook loose for a touchdown before the Yellowjackets finally wrestled him down on their own 33-yard line.

Cleburne was unable to muster any semblance of an offense until the game had been long since beyond recall. The Yellowjackets were hopelessly behind 43-0 with less than five minutes left to play before Longview reserves relaxed their stiff defense and permitted the losers to shove across two touchdowns.

The Lobos furnished bristling blocking for their ball carriers and the Longview line, led at various times by big Bobby Blakelet, Horaney from his linebacker's post, Jack Williams, Carl Lively, Claude Pliler and a host of other smothered the Cleburne offense so completely that the Yellowjackets had a total of net gain of only 41 yards at the half.

The Lobos wasted no time in showing they meant business by taking a 24-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The sheer momentum of their blazing attack was startling as they pushed the Yellowjackets from one end of the held to the other almost with reckless abandon.

Nash returned the opening kickoff from behind his own goal line to the 17 and then romped 21 yards around left end on the next play. Matthews failed to gain at center and Nash picked up up two at right end. Then Matthews fired a jump pass to Martin 'Jeep' Reynolds for a first down on Cleburne's 28 and from there Nash skirted left end to score. He made a spectacular leap at the five to clear a tackler and scooted into the end zone.

Three plays later Billy Wayne Dodson intercepted a pass on Cleburne's 28-yard line and the Lobos headed toward pay dirt again. Nash swept right end for a first down on the 17. A five-yard penalty for delay of game halted the Lobos momentarily, but Matthews fired to Pliler for nine and Nash made it a first down on the five. On the next play, he skirted right end for another touchdown.

The Yellowjackets took the kickoff but couldn't make any headway and punted to the 50. Matthews picked up 14 at right end and Horaney added one at center. Then Mattews ripped over tackle for 34 and a first down on the one from where Horaney plowed over to score.

Just before the first quart ended Hesse speared a Cleburne player and and in an entirely unfamiliar role as a ball carrier tried to find someone to whom he could lateral. But the remainder of the Lobos were busy throwing a screen of blockers around him, so the big tackle tucked the ball under his arm and lumbered 47 yards untouched in to the end zone.

There was no scoring in the second quarter and the half also ended 24-0, although Longview pushed to Cleburne's three and again to the six during the period.

Early in the third quarter the Longview scoring machine went back into action and marched 54 yards for a fifth touchdown with Matthews blasting his way over right tackle for the last 23 yards. Midway in the period, the Lobos strove 50 yards to score again. Matthews skirting rig the end standing up front the 11. Pliler kick the extra point, the only one the Lobos converted in seven attempts.

Late in the third quarter L.T. Mobbs, speedy reserve tailback, chalked up Longview's seventh and final touchdown when he intercepted a pass and with the aid of a dazzling burst of speed, scampered 35 yards into the end zone.

With time running out in the fourth quarter, the Yellowjackets finally began moving and scored twice in the final five minutes. They marched 80 yards for their first touchdown with Bill Leonard plowing over from the two.

Cleburne's second touchdown came with little more than a minute to play when the visitors recovered a fumble on Longview's 19-yard line and Julian Hinton passed the rest of the distance to Joe Young. The latter booted the extra point.
