PORT NECHES AND LOBOS TIE
LONGVIEW - The Port Neches Indians, held in check for most of the game, broke loose for a touchdown in each of the last two periods and were knocking at the goal line for a third at the final gun; but the best they could do was to salvage a 13-13 tie with the Longview Lobos here Friday night.

The Wolves scored a touchdown in the second quarter and another early in the third period on a 67-yard punt return but their attack bogged down then and they did not make a first down in the entire last half. That, plus a devastating aerial combination of Bob Trahan to Jimmy Burnett, overhauled the Wolves and then rocked them back near their own goal line where the clock ran out as the Indians reached the Lobo five.

After a scoreless first quarter, the wolves took the ball on their own 17 and drove to their first score. Sonny Jones carried the ball over the last stripe on a play in which he faked a handoff and skirted left end for seven years. His attempted conversion was bad and the 6-0 score stood through the first half.

Early in the third period, Dick Nash took an Indian punt on his own 33, fielding it on a dead run and cashing through the defending Redskins for 67 yards and a touchdown. This time Jones converted for a 13-0 lead.

Late in the same period, the Tribe got to rolling. Olen Whitmire intercepted a Lobo pass on the Indian 40 and returned it to the Lobo 47. From there they moved down to the Lobo 19, from where Trahan pitched one into the end zone which was battled by a Lobo defender right into Burnett's sticky hands. Trahan converted to make the count 13-7.

The Indians took over on a punt on their own 36 and then opened their second touchdown drive midway in the last period. The tally came on another pass from Trahan to Burnett from the five. The point that would have won for the visitors soured as Trahan's kick went wide.

First downs favored Port Neches 12-11 and yards gained rushing were 164-161 in their favor. Their passing attacked netted, 134, more yards to the Wolves' 43.

Sonny Jones' bruising running was the stick out for the Wolves, although Dick Nash's beautiful touchdown jaunt was a fancy hit of stepping. The Wolves' blocking was crisp in the first half, but the rough play of the Tribe battered them down pretty well in the late stages.

Trahan was devastating in his running from the T, and the pass receiving of Burnett was great.
