JONES RACKS UP 32 POINTS AS LOBOS BEAT ENNIS 45-13
LONGVIEW - Flashing their most potent offense in several years, the Longview Lobos slashed out a one-sided 45-13 victory over a victory-starved Ennis aggregation before 2,000 fans at the local arena Friday night. It was a rejuvenated Lobo squad which racked up the decisive trump - a far cry from the team which was held to a mere nine yards rushing against Marshall seven days earlier.

Led by All-State Candidate Sonny Jones and pin-point passer John Linney, the Green and White was unstoppable Friday night. They scored the first three times they laid their hands on the pigskin, and only the fact that Coach Maco Stewart rushed his second and third stringers into the game kept the score from mounting. Jones, who is heralded as Longview's greatest running back since Don Fambrough, racked up 32 of the winner's 45 points.

The locals tallied on a 75-yard pass play the first time they received possession of the ball. After Tommy Rae had returned Ken Vavra's punt five yards to the Lobo 25, Linney faded back on first down and nailed Jim Sanford with a 35-yard aerial. The fleet-footed Sanford hauled in the perfect toss on the Lion 40 and outraced the Ennis defenders to the goal. Jones booted the extra point and Longview took a lead they never relinquished.

The winners chalked up another touchdown two minutes later after Vavra had punted out of bounds on his own 42-yard stripe. Jones started wide around end, cut back off tackle and romped the distance to the end zone. Glenn Savage tossed the key block which shook the Sunshine Special loose.

Longview recovered an Ennis fumble on the Lion 29 and scored in two plays. Earl Williams pounced on the loose ball after a jarring tackle by Tom Bufkin had separated Billy Brasher from the pigskin he was attempting to advance. Linney flipped a nifty screen pass to Sanford who was knocked out of bounds on the enemy four-yard marker. Jones ripped up the middle to the goal line, fumbled when hit, and Judd McRee recovered in the end zone for the touchdown.

Ennis blocked a Jones quick kick on the Lobo 11 just before the end of the quarter and Vavra, one of the best backs on the field Friday night, tossed a touchdown pass to Bobby McClendon in the end zone. McClendon added the point and Longview led 20-7.

The Green and White scored only once in the second stanza as Stewart cleared the bench of his reserves. The drive covered 75 yards and was initiated in the dying moments of the first quarter. Jones ripped off runs of 16,12 and 9 yards en route to the score. He flipped a lateral to Linney good for 20 yards to set the stage for his six-yard payoff plunge.

Longview took the second half kickoff and pieced together a 65-yard touchdown march which found Jones romping over from nine yards out. The stocky junior ripped off a 34-yard run to highlight the surge. Ennis narrowed the gap in the final stanza when they turned a Linney fumble into a six-pointer. Johnny was shaken loose from the oval on the Lobo five-yard line and Mike Kelly bulled over the visitors in two plays.

The Green Wave rolled right back to chalk up a touchdown in eight plays. They covered 67 yards during the drive which was terminated when Sonny slammed over from the one-yard line. A spectacular Linney to Jones aerial with a lateral to Bill Lubedkin asked on for good measure, ate up 22 yards. Johnny pitched an 18-yard strike to Special to set the ball inside Ennis' five-yard line. That made it 38-7.

The final score came shortly before the final gun. Substitute quarterback Jerry Matthews, who is being groomed for the departing Linney's post, threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jones to rack up the final six-pointer.

The Green Wave terminates its 1949 campaign against Gladewater in the traditional Thanksgiving Day classic against the Bruins over in the Oil City Thursday afternoon.
