MARSHALL ANNEXES TITLE BY DEFEATING LOBOS, 19-0
MARSHALL - Marshall High School's steam roller grid machine crunched out a methodical 19-0 triumph over an inspired Longview squad here Friday night before 7,000 fans who were treated to a fine exhibition of power football at its potent best. The victory enabled the Mavericks to cop the 9-2A bunting for the second time in five yards. They will probably play host to up and coming Lufkin's Panthers in their bi-district test around December 1st.

A gallant, hard-charging Longview line led by all-district guard Tom Bufkin, battled the Mavericks to a stand-still for two quarters and forced the Marshall aggregation to take tot eh air waves for their initial touchdown. The Maroons' first score came with a mere 85 seconds before the gun sounded for the first half. They combined the sensational pitching talents of lanky Jack McMurry with the phenomenal catching of all-state candidate Jim Gist to march 68 yards to the touchdown.

Shortly before the pay-off drive, the Green Wave rolled back a Steer attempt to score from Longview's one-yard stripe. A jolting tackle by Bufkin and Wade Pointer shook the ball carried Boyd Ray Collins loose from the ball and Billy Shaw recovered for the Lobos. The Mavs marched right bad following Sonny Jones' 34-yard boot, and worked the ball down inside the five yard marker, but Longview's stout line held for downs. Tommy Rae intercepted a McMurry pass on the next series of plays and ran the ball out to his own 36 to get Longview out of the hole, but the Mavs hit up the aerial fireworks with less than three minutes of playing time remaining.

Taking over on his own 32, McMurry shot a bullet to 153-pound wingman Joe Crouch good for six yards. Next he flipped to Gist on the Lobo 39. His next toss was incomplete, but he hit Crouch for another six yards, then sent one down to Gist on the 17. A five yard penalty for delay of game set the Steers back on their 22, but McMurry made it up on an 11 yard aerial complete to the elusive Crouch. The touchdown came on the next play, a coffin owner toss to Gist who made a circus catch as he was hit by Jim Sanford, and flopped across the goal line. Jim Duncan added his 24th consecutive extra point to put Marshall out in front 7-0.

The winners tallied again less than four minutes after the start of the third canto. Longview took the kickoff, but lost five yards in two running plays. Jones booted from his own 10, and it was taken on the 49 by Delbert Rowland who returned to the 24. A McMurry to Marvin Hall pass lost tow yards but Big Jack tossed a stripe to Gist on the Lobo 8-yard stripe. The 180-pound quarterback and son of the Maverick coach, rammed over tackle the remaining distance to the end zone for Marshall's second touchdown. Duncan's amazing extra point skien was terminated at 24 straight on the next play,w hen his placement boot sailed wide of the goal posts.

Marshall shoved some classy reserve backs into the ball game shortly before the final gun and they ripped the tiring Longview forward wall apart en route to their third touchdown. After the replacements had succeeded in carrying to the Lobo 31, McMurry and Gist took over and covered the remaining yardage in four plays. Gist outfought two Lobo defenders for a McMurry pass on the Lobo 14, then the pile driving quarterback rammed his way down to the nine-yard stripe. He carried once more tot he four and went over from that point. Once more Duncan failed to convert and the ball game was over immediately following his conversion attempt.

The game was a lot closer than the score indicted, despot the fact that Longview was able to gain but nine yards rushing. Although they were never capable of placing together a serious touchdown drive, the Lobo defenders turned in one of their best defensive game of the year and they won the respect of the partisan Marshall rooters with their vicious tackling and stout-hearted goal line stands. It was the first time this year teat the Mavs were forced to resort to the air lanes for their touchdowns. Without the towing Gist, who caught everything which came his way, the score might have been 7-0. He and McMurry earned their all-district spots as a result of their terrific play. Bufkin left little doubt that pound for pound, he is Texas' greatest guard.

The Mavs succeeded in bottling up Sonny Jones, but even in defeat the hard-workin fullback won the respect of the crowd. But Friday night's story is wrapped around a couple of kids named Gist and McMurry, and a Lobo line which stood up and slugged it out toe-to-toe with a team which should carry the 9-AA colors far in the coming playoffs.
