LOBOS SKID TO TRIUMPH OVER KILGORE IN MUD
LONGVIEW - If Coach Maco Stewart has his way, and the very mercenary Mr. C.N. "Cold Cash" Wilkinson hopes he doesn't, the Lobos can play the rest of their ball games in the rain. Though they took beating at the gate, the Green Wave was in complete command out on the field as they roared to a 6-0 victory over a weak-sister Kilgore team which was a mere shadow of some of the great aggregations which represented the Oil City in years gone by.

Played before a rain drenched crowd of less than 300, the game was a drab affair despite the fact the Longview team flashed it best ground attack of the season and Kilgore never threatened.

Once more it was the story of Sonny Jones, teaming this time with all-district guard candidate Tommy Burkin to pace the locals. to their second conference triumph in three starts. And Coach Stewart took the occasion to spring a surprise in the form of an unheralded quarterback, who showed signs of adding plenty of running power and much needed blocking to the Longview backfield. He is piston-legged Charley Farrar, who came off the bench and made the fans sit up and take notice with his furious line bucks and sharp blocking.

The victory belonged to the Lobo forward wall, which kept the sputtering Bulldog offense well under control every minute of the ball game. They outcharged and generally out-maneuvered the Kilgore linemen, and never allowed the invaders to get inside the Lobo 25 yard maker.

The Green Wave rolled to its first quarter touchdown less than five minutes after the opening kickoff. IT came after Burkin, a magnificent little performer, rushed in to block Bob Britt's punt on the Kilgore 22.

Jones was stopped on the 21 attempting to slice off tackle, then quarterback Johnny Linney wisely called for a bit of trickery which paid off handsomely. He had center Darrell Cox snap the ball to Jones, who went charging toward the same tackle spot. This time, however, he handed off to speedy Tommy Rae, and the fleet-footed Rae swept wide around the end of the touchdown. Sonny's boot was wide and that was all the scoring for the night.

Longview threatened early in the second quarter after Jones blocked another punt. He recovered on the Bulldog 35. Linney immediately pitched to Jud McRee for 12 yards, then Jones picked up 11. Two more ground played engineered by the Sunshine Special carried to the nine yard line, but Kilgore took over when two Linney passes fell incomplete.

Britt kicked out to the 32, and Linney tossed to Rae on the 21. He hit Earl Williams with a seven yard aerial and Jones rolled for a first down on the ten. Linney's pass into the end zone overshot McRee, then Sonny cracked the line for five. Two more aerials failed to hit the mark and Kilgore took over again.

The Green and White had the ball on the Kilgore 26 with just seconds remaining as the result of another blocked punt by Jones. Sonny immediately went for nine yards on first down, but three incomplete passes blew the opportunity.

The second half was played largely between the 30 yard stripes, with neither team being able to threaten seriously. Kilgore reached the Lobo 26 and needed one yard on fourth down for a new series of downs, but Bufkin stopped Britt cold and Longview took over.

Line Coach Swede Dees complimented his linemen for their performance in the mud and paid high tribute to the Kilgore forward wall, which braced nicely in the second half.

Linemen who bore the brunt of the Lobo defense included McRee, Billy Shaw, Ronnie Lemmons, Charley Malone, Wade Pointer, Cox, Carlos Griffin, Bufkin and Dick Hurst to mention a few.
