LOBOS UPSET FAVORED TEARKANA
TEXARKANA - An underdog Lobo grid team, which was doped to lose by two touchdowns, shocked Teas football fandom by turning in a dramatic 13-6 triumph over a bewildered Texarkana Tiger aggregation before 5,500 fans here Friday night. Led by their famed Sunshine Special - Sonny Jones - the Green Wave rolled tot heir first district victory since 1947.

Longview clinched the victory a week ago, when Coach Maco Stewart wisely switched Jones to John Linney's tailback post during a practice session. The all-state candidate, who had been stopped cold in three previous games, ran wild from his new position. Against Texarkana, he was the best running back on the field and accounted for 137 of the Lobos' 192 yards gained rushing.

The Green Wave, inspired for this one, proved they meant business from the start. After Wayne Wall had returned Jones' opening kickoff 15 yards to the Tiger 30, Jerry Norton fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and Jud McRee recovered. Longview could gain only six yards in three plays, so Linney called for a punt. Attempting to boot out of bounds, Johnny missed the coffin corner and the ball rolled into the end zone. Texarkana took over on their own 20. Norton immediately booted 40 yards to Jones, who returned 21 to the Tiger 39.

Sonny brook off tackle for 15, end Tommy Rae ripped to the 15, Jones picked up a first down on the 11, but Texarkana held for downs on the six yard stripe, after a Linney pass in the end zone ticketed for Billy Shaw fell incomplete.

The Tigers, paced by the magnificent Norton, marched 62 yards in five plays before relinquishing possession. Norton's 25 yard aerial intended for Bruce Bagwell in the end zone, overshot the tall wingman who was in the clear.

Jones set up the Longview initial touchdown early in the second quarter when he cracked off tackle for 40 yards. The hard-running Lobo broke into the clear, but was hauled in from behind by Wall on the Tiger 40. Linney picked up four, then after an incomplete pass, he nailed Earl Williams with a 12 harder good for a first on the Texarkana 25. He then flipped to Billy Shaw for 15 and the Lobos were rolling. Jones got five around right end, and Linney hit the weak side tackle for two. The Sunshine Special rolled down the tracks to the Touchdown Terminal, and Longview went out in front 6-0. Sonny booted the extra point.

The Tigers came right back, and led by All-State Norton, they pushed over a score 67 seconds before the end of the half.

Bagwell took Jones' short kickoff on his 32 and returned to the 41. Norton ran for nine, and an offside penalty against Longview gave the Bengals a first down on the Lobo 44. Three plays lost five, and Tearkanaa kicked. Longview returned the punt after it was unable to gain three tries and Norton raced it back 20 yard to the Green and White 35. Handling the ball six times in succession, Jerry plowed over from the six yard marker. A Norton to Wall pass, good for 15 yards, put the ball in scoring position. The entire Lobo forward wall, which turned in a magnificent game, rose up to block Norton's try for the all-important extra point.

Longview scored midway through the fourth stanza after repulsing a determined Texarkana touchdown drive in the third quarter. The latter was checked four yards from pay dirt, following a 52-yard march by the defending district champions.

Big Wade Pointer, outstanding Lobo tackle, provided Longview's "insurance" marker when he intercepted a Norton pass on the Tiger 34 and scooted down the sidelines 30 yards to the enemy four. Linney hit off tackle for the touchdown on second down, but Jones' try of the point was wide.

The Green Wave threatened mildly at the start of the fourth period when Tommy Rae returned a Norton punt 50 yards to the Tiger 32, but the drive failed to materialize after the Lobos drew a 15 yard penalty. The Bengals attempted a series of desperation passes in the fading moments of the game, and succeeded in crossing over into the Lobo territory, but a booming 63 yard kick by Jones set them back on their heels, and they never recovered.

Outstanding for the Green and Whte was the entire forward wall. Darrell Cox, Tom Bufkin, Carlos Griffin, Pointer, Dick Hurst, Shaw, McRee, Charley Malone and Ronnie Lemmons - to name just a few, turned in a sparkling performances. In the backfield, the defensive work of Glenn Savage, Shibley Horaney, Earl Williams and Rae cannot go unnoticed.
