GLADEWATER BRUINS BATTER LONGVIEW IN FINALE, 33-7
LONGVIEW - Gladewater's favored Bruins hit the victory trail for the first time in 10 years against a Longview team, trouncing the Lobos 33-7 before 6,000 fans in their Thanksgiving Day classic player here.

Led by Bobby Honeycutt and Charley Bowlin, the Texas high school version of Army's Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside, the Bruins tallied in every period to completely outclass the stubborn Lobos.

Gladewater scored late in the first quarter after a fumble by Tom Kent was picked up by Leon Briggs at midfield. Charlie Bowlin broke loose for 9 on a spinner, then Bob Honeycutt picked up a first down the Lobo 36. Bill Looney skirted end for a first on Longview's 24, then after he picked up four. Honeycutt raced around left end for the score.

Charlie Bowlin's try for the point was low.

The Bruins picked up their second midway through the second quarter after a tremendous 57-yard kick by Herb Cole set the stage. Cole booted a high spiral over the Longview safety man's head and it died on the Green and White 27.

After two running plays picked up a mere four yards, Jim Nelson dropped back to kick. The big fullback took the snap from center then whipped a pass down the middle intended for Jackie Bell.

The pass, a perfect strike, hit the mark but Bell allowed the ball to dribble off his fingertips. Meanwhile, Honeycutt came racing in from his safety position to grab up the ball before it touched the ground and zig-zagged down to the Longview two-yard stripe before he was pulled down by Nelson.

Bowlin went over on second down, then added the extra point to put the cross country visitors ahead 13-0.

After the kickoff, the Lobos handed the ball to Sonny Jones and told the Sophomore star to "get going." Jones showed definite promise with his hard-hitting line smashes - picking up 15 yards in three tries. Linney tossed 20 yards to Fox Cashell on the Lobo 45 just as the half ended.

But it was strictly Gladewater's day, and no one Lobo could alter the course of the game. The winner's lost little time in pushing over a third period touchdown. It came when Bowlin punted to Fox Cashell, who took the ball on his 10, and was dragged back to the six by end Leon Briggs, who turned in a terrific game for Bill Stage's Bears.

Briggs jarred the ball loose from Cashell's grasp, then pounced on the loose oval. When the whistle blew, it was Gladewater's ball on the Lobo six. Honeycutt went over on first down and Bowlin added the point to make it 20-0.

Longview held for the remainder of the period, but both teams shot the works in the last quarter.

Longview appeared to have the Bruins in a hole half way through the final frame when Nelson angled a beautiful punt out of bounds on the enemy 14. But Bowlin and Honeycutt combined to pick up 10 yards and a first down on the Bear 24, then Bowlins wept around the outside for 76 yards and the touchdown. The kick was blocked by tiny Tommy Bufkin and Gladewater went ahead 26-0.

Longview came back fighting and racks up a score in four pass plays which once more showed why Johnny Linney is considered the best passer in District 11-AA. The Longview Lujack flipped to Jackie Bell for a first on the Lobo 43, then tossed to Bell for nine yards to the Gladewater 49. His next completion hit Fox Cashell good for 27 yards to the Bear 24.

The payoff pitch was hauled in by Jim Nelson who turned in a brilliant run to go over standing up. Cashell's boot was good and Longview narrowed the gap to 26-7.

Honecuctt ruined any hopes the Lobos had of whittling the margin any further when he cracked inside just one play after the Longview kickoff and went 76 yards for a touchdown. Bowlin added the point, making the score 33-7 and that was the ball game.
