LINNEY PITCHES LOBOS INTO 20-20 TIE WITH CLEBURNE
LONGVIEW - Shades of T.A. Scott stalked across Longview's Lobo Stadum Friday night in the form of young Johnny Linney, an unheralded substitute quarterback who can toss a football with almost deadly accuracy. It was Linney, a 160-pound junior who pitched the Lobos into a 20-20 tie with a surprisingly tough Cleburne team after the Central Texans had swept the Green and White off their feet in the first half.

If it was Linney who salvaged the ball game, then it was certainly Foxie Cashell who kept the flickering Longview hopes alive. The chunky veteran played his heart out in one of he finest individual performances ever unreeled on the local turf. It was Fox's 70 yard scamper with an intercepted pass which put the Lobos back in the ball game after the invaders had piled up a 13-0 margin in the first two quarters. Then, when the Lobos opened up their passing attack in the second half, it was the same Cashell who tok a Linney pass down to the visitor's 12-yard stripe to set up the second Longview score. Called on to kick the game-tying extra point after the local team had scored with less than two minutes remaining in the game, Cashell showed he could produce under pressure by calmly booting the try from placement.

The game started out as a repetition of the Lobo-Paris affair a week ago. The Green and White kicked off to Cleburne and slippery Ralph Junell returned 20 yards to the Yellowjacket 30. On the first play from scrimmage Junell fumbled and the Lobos' alert Mack Brewton recovered. Linney tossed to Earl Williams for a first down on the 18, then he flipped to Williams again for 11 yards to the Cleburne 7-yard marker. A quick pass intended for Williams, who was crossing the goal line, slipped out of the huge wingman's grasp after he had seemingly caught the ball. On the next play, Joe West of the invaders intercepted a short pass by Linney intended for Cashell.

Junell immediately kicked out of danger and Cashell returned to the 35. After three running plays had failed to gain, Cashell angled a beautiful spiral out of bounds on the Jacket one-yard line. Junell kicked again to Cashell who fumbled when hit and Cleburne recovered on their own 34. Junell, who turned in a magnificent running game, gained eight, then big Don Brown ripped off 29 yards. Junell made a first down on the Lobo 15, and the Johnson county crew had a touchdown two plays later with Brown driving over from the eight-yard line on a wide and sweep. Bill Bandy's try for the point was low.

Tom Kent fumbled to set up the second Yellowjacket tally. The hard driving fullback was torn loose from the ball on his own 44 shortly before the end of the first stanza. Cleburne recovered and started a drive toward the Lobo goal which featured a series of long gains around the Lobo flanks. A 22-yard advance by substitute halfback Jimmy Rosser highlighted the touchdown drive. Rosser set the ball down the Lobo 12 and Brown scooted over for the tally on another touchdown. Brandy added the point and Cleburne went ahead, 13-0.

Another Lobo fumble shortly after the kickoff gave Cleburne possession on the Green and White 28, but a penalty and two running plays set the visitors back to the Lobo3 8. Junell attempted to pass on third down, but Cashell came in from out of nowhere to intercept the toss on his own 30 and didn't stop running until he crossed the Jacket goal line 70 yards away. He immediately added the point from placement and the Lobos took life.

However inspired the Green Wave became after the turn in events, Cleburne's slashes around the wings continued to pay off. With less than two minutes remaining before the end of the first half, the Jackets aggregation put on a sustained drive which netted them their final tally. The advance covered 60 yards and was featured by the ball carrying of substitute fullback Tommy Morse. He almost single-handedly carried the ball down to within the shadows of the Longview goal before Love came through for the six points.

The kick, this time by Rosser, was good and cleburne led 20-7 at the half.

Ninety-nine out of a hundred fans in the stands wouldn't have given a plugged nickel for the Lobo chances in the second half. This writer doesn't know what coach Maco Stewart told his team in that 15 minutes while the bands were playing, but it was a completely revitalized Longview squad which took over in the third quarter. Cleburne's sweeps around end were stopped almost without gain. Linney, who passed only four times in the first half, opened up with an aerial barrage which had reminiscing Lobo fans comparing him to the brilliant T.A. Scott.

Cleburne kicked off and Kent returned to the 41. A Linney pass to Jack Bell overshot the mark, but his next toss to Williams hit the end who couldn't hold the ball, and Longview kicked. Cleburne could not gain, so they returned the compliment, the ball rolling into the end zone and being put into play on the Lobo 20. Cashell tore loose for 15, and Kent carried to the 47 and Longview was on the way.

Linney flipped to Kent, then he hit Bell for a first down on the Jacket 44. Kent gained down to the 38 then Linney pitched to Cashell for a long first down on the Jacket 12. Faking a pass, Linney carried down to the Cleburne one-yard line, where he carried over on a quarterback sneak. Cashell's try for the point after was slightly wide of the posts and Longview was back in the ball game.

The teams battled on even terms up until the final four minutes of the contest. Longview was playing for the break and they got it with two minutes to go. Cashell kicked into the end zone and it was the Jackets' ball on their own 20. Billy Clark fred to get over tackle, but Dick Hurst, Pancho Tamez and big Brewton nailed him. Clark fumbled and Longview recovered. It was first and 10 for the Lobos on the Cleburne 21 and the crowd yelled itself hoarse.

Once more it was Linney, this time to Billy Shaw for 16 yards to the Cleburne 5. Then Kent bulled through for one and Linney carried around end for three to the one-yard line. Kent took a vicious smack at the line and scored.

That made it 20-19.

Darrel Cox snapped the ball back to Linney, who placed it down. The kick was good as gold and the game was all tied up.

The gun went off less than a minute later.

The Lobos entertain Texarkana in their first district assignment of the year next Friday night. The badly battered Lobo line came back strongly in the second half after turning in a dismal first half performance. Tom Bufkin, Brewton and 14-year-old Dick Hurst were especially alert for the Lobos on the forward wall.
