LONGVIEW - After blowing three scoring opportunities in the first half, Longview's victory-starved Lobos buckled down in their third quarter to rack up a touchdown which gave them a 6-0 triumph over the Paris Wildcats. more than 4,000 fans saw the contest which was played at Lobo Stadium.
A pair of 1947 junior high stars paced the Green and White to their initial win of the year. Hard running Sonny Jones and wingman Jud McRee sparked the Lobos offense and defense and both flashed definite signs of future greatness. Jones in particular was nothing short of sensational on the defense in addition to ripping off several sparkling gains in his ball carrying role. McRee stopped Paris almost single-handedly in the fourth quarter with three successive tackles which tossed the Wildcat ball carriers for a net loss of 27 yards. The Lobos got a big break on the first play of the game when they recovered Bobby Buckman's fumble on the Paris 41. Buckman had returned Jone's kickoff from his own 15 to the 41 and was jarred loose from the ball when he was hit by a swarm of Longview linemen on the 41. The Green and White carried to the 33 in three downs, but were forced to punt. Fox Cashell's spiral went into the end zone and was put into play on the Wildcat 20. Paris drew two successive off side penalties and Billy Martin kicked out to Gene Hardin who returned eight yards to the visitors 30. After Hardin was stopped for no gain, Cashell tore loose for 12 yards to the 'Cat's 18. tom Kent was tossed for a four had loss, but Hardin picked up seven off tackle. A pair of line smashes failed to pick up a first down and Paris took over on their own 10. Once more Martin booted on first down with Cashell returning seven yards to the enemy 34. Hardin got give then Cashell ripped loose again for 13 and the Lobos were knocking at the door of opportunity once again. But a five yard backfield in motion penalty and two successive losses on running plays set the Green and White all the way back to the 'Cat 27 as Paris took over on downs. Longview came bouncing back a moment later when Jones recovered a Paris fumble on the visitors 26 yard marker, but a five yard penalty and three running plays lost exactly 11 yards. Cashell attempted to punt out of bounds on fourth down but the ball glanced off the side of his foot and rolled out on the Paris 31. The North Texans racked up two successive first downs and rolled to the Lobo 41 before Martin was forced to punt. The ball traveled only two yards upfield and rolled out of bounds on the Longview 40 to give the Green and White another big break. But once more the winner's couldn't move upfield. After Martin punted Johnny Linney tossed a bullet pass to Earl Williams good for 22 yards to the Longview 46. Hardin and Cashell advanced to the Paris 46 in two running plays then Jones tore loose and carried to the 'Cat's 21 in two tries at the line. Once more the Lobo attack went into reverse as two penalties and three running plays lost 11 yards and Cashell kicked to Billy Martin on the Paris 13. Martin raced five yards up the sidelines before Jones lowered the boom. Martin was injured on the play and forced from the ball game. He was rushed to a local hospital where it was learned that he suffered a badly bruised elbow. Less than 30 seconds remained as Paris took over. Fullback Bob Ingram picked up five and Buckman gained four. Buckman was tossed for a five yard loss by Pat Collier and Mack Brewton, then the Cats tried a fourth down pass. Tom Kent came rushing in to intercept the oval and appeared headed for a touchdown, but he stumbled and fell on the Paris 11 yard line as the gun sounded to end the first half. The third quarter was all Longview, with Martin eventually going over from the 11 yard marker after a beautiful punt return by Fox Cashell had given the Lobo's possession of the ball on the Paris 31. An incomplete pass and two running plays got the ball down to the visitor's 26. A poor punt by Cashell got only one yard and Paris had the ball on their 25. Jones made a sensational interception of Ingram's third down pass to give Longview possession on the Paris 37. Cashell and Jones got eight in a pair of line plays, but a penalty set Longview back to the 33. Linney then hit Jones with an aerial which carried to the 31, then Kent got five, Hardin three and Kent made it a first down on the 11. On the first play from scrimmage, Hardin cracked off left tackle, cut for the sidelines and outraced the secondary to the goal line. It was a quick opening play and the speedy Hardin was over the goal line before most fans had realized what had happened. Fox Cashell's try for the point was wide of the mark. The remainder of the game was a see-saw battle, with neither squad capable of penetrating the other's 20 yard marker. McRee turned in a brilliant display of defensive football midway through the final stanza when he raced in from his end position to toss Paris ball carries for three successive losses totaling 27 yards. The entire Lobo line led by guards Dick Hurst and Pat Collier were charging beautifully in the final quarter. Maco Stewart used practically every man on the bench during the course of the contest. The Lobos entertain a rugged Cleburne eleven here next Friday night. |
