LOBOS END UNDEFEATED SEASON WITH 13-7 TRIUMPH
GLADEWATER - The Longview Lobos rang down the curtain on their first undefeated season in 10 years by outscoring an inspired Gladewater eleven 13-7 before 6,000 thoroughly thrilled spectators here on a sunny Thanksgiving Day afternoon. Gladewater's third-period score broke the Lobos hope for an unsecured on season.

Off to a quick two-touchdown lead, the Green and White settled back in the this and fourth quarter to their defensive style of football and it almost cost them the ball game. Immediately after the Bears scored, however, the Lobos turned on their offensive power - which was ht best they've displayed this year - and were marching toward the Gladewater goal at the final gun.

Roy Anderson kicked off to chunky Bob Honeycutt on the Bear 5 to start the game. The speedy back, who was a thorn in the Lobos' side all afternoon, returned 25 yards to the 30 then he picks up 11 on a smack at the line. Herb Cole went for 5 then Charley Bowlin tried to get around Don Menasco, but the brilliant Lobo pivot man shook him with a bone rattling tackle which forced him to fumble and Menasco recovered, on the Bear 46.

Fox Cashell's first down pass was intercepted by bowline on the Bear 32. After three downs lost 1 yard, Jackie Barton went back to kick, but he received a bad pass from center Pat Diffie which allowed the Lobo line to come surging in to block the kick and Buddy Terry recovered on Gladewater's 24.

Joltin' Jimmy Pakenham, who teamed with Honeycutt to put on a great running display, picked up five on an off-tackle slant, then Fox Cashell outraced the Gladeater line on a 10-yard advance around the end. Pakenham bulled his way tot he 6-yard stripe and bobby Harris scooted over from there for the initial touchdown - just 11 plays after the start of the game. The try for the point was wide of the posts.

Longview kicked off and Gladewater couldn't gain in three running plays, so Barton punted to Rogers on the Lobo 45. Amy shook off three tacklers and returned neatly to the Bear 40. Willie Uhlenhoff was smeared for a four-yard loss on an end around play, then Pakenham flipped a perfect jump pass to Don Barton for 10 yards and a first down, then followed this up with a pass to Roach which carried down tot eh Bears' 10-yard line. Jack Serpass hit the line for two, then Pakenham missed a touchdown by a yard as the Gladewater line held for downs.

After Gladewater couldn't move once https://lobohistory.com, Jack Barton tried to punt from the end zone, but the kick was partially blocked by Bobby Anglin. It came down on the Gladewater 9-yard line where Pakenham grabbed it and was hit immediately. Don Barton raced to the 4-yard line on a handoff, then Pakenham jolted over for the score. Cashell's try for the point was perfect and Longview led 13-0 at the half.

The Bears came roaring back at the start of the third quarter and it was evident that they would shoot the works. Barton's kick, which rolled out of bounds on the Longview 6, was the play which set the stage for the score which came a few minutes later.

Pakenham kicked on first down to Stan Bowlin who took the ball on his own 49 and returned nicely to the winners' 35. Bowlin and Cole gained only 3 yards in two plays then Honeycutt blasted his way around end for 12 and a first down on the Lobo 21. Successive cracks at the line gained a first down on the 10 for the Orange and Black and the fans began to go wild.

Honeycutt tried two line plays but was held for no gain. Cole went for three yards on a drive over guard and with seven yards remaining and fourth down coming up, it appeared certain that Gladewater would join the "we didn't score against Longview," club. But they reckoned without this boy Honeycutt who took the snap from center and skirted his left end for the score as the Gladewater rooters yelled themselves hoarse.

Everett Kellar booted the extra point and that made it, 13-7.

That was the Bears' first and last serious attempt. Longview came fighting back in the fourth quarter to keep the Bears well back in their own territory while staging a touchdown march which was stopped by the time-keeper's watch.

To those who thought the Green and White might fold up if scored on, their sparkling performance after the Gladewater touchdown immediately eliminated that theory.

They were driving toward pay dirt at the gun and Pakenham, who played the entire second half with three teeth broken off at the gums, was every bit the all-stater that he was cracked up to be.

Surprise of the day was Roy Anderson's sparkling play in the tackle position he took over from injured Algee Callahan. Anglin turned in his best game of the year and Eaves and Fuller showed up well in the guard slots. Menasco quieted the Gladewater fans who heckled him early in the game by turning in one of his finest all around performance.

Fox Cashell, Rogers, Barton and Harris were clicking nicely for good gains in the backfield and Jimmy Nelson came through with a 53-yard kick when he substituted for Pakenham.

Honeycutt was the man of the hour for the losers. Diffie, Briggs and Tipton were outstanding for the Bears.
