LOBOS CONTINUE VICTORY MARCH WITH 3-0 WIN OVER TYLER
LONGVIEW - Longview's undefeated and unscored on Lobos worked their way into the 11-AA driver's seat on the strength of Fox Cashell's second quarter field goal which gave them a 3-0 decision over the roaring Tyler Lions before 9,000 fans at Lobo Stadium Friday night. The Longview victory, and Marshall's 7-0 loss to Texarkana gives the Green and White undisputed possession of the league lead for the first time this year.

Cashell, who has been kicking placement attempts through the uprights with almost monotonous regularity this season, booted a 9-yarder through the goal posts from an oblique angle after three ground plays failed to carry the ball over the goal line. Jimmy Eaves, aggressive Lobo guard set the stage of the score by causing Tyler's Herb Koen to fumble Jimmy Pakenham's punt on the enemy 8. Eaves recovered the oval and Longview was in scoring position. Cashell took a crack at the line and picked up one, Pakenham was smeared at the line of scrimmage then Fox got back three of the yards on third down.

At this point, Maco Stewart decided to gamble on a field goal - the first attempted by Cashell in his high school playing career - and the chunky 165 pounder calmly sent the ball sailing through the uprights from 9 yards out. Jack Serpass held the ball.

That opened and closed the scoring for the night, but Tyler sent 9,000 blood pressures sky rocketing on two other occasions before the time keeper's gun came to the rescue of the Lobos and the fans.

It was a new and determined Lion eleven which roared onto the gridiron to start the second half. Whereas the Lobos were able to dominate the play in the first two quarters, the Lions took matters into their own hands in the latter frames. Ed Thompson took Fox Cashell's second half kickoff on his own 24 and raced back to his 36 before Bobby Anglin nailed him to the turf. Allen picked up 4 and Knight made it a first down on the Lobo 49.

Three ground plays failed to pick up the necessary yardage and Hays punted in Rogers who fumbled and recovered on his 14. Barton gained three over tackle and Pakenham quick kicked to Koen on the enemy 30, and Koen ran it back beautifully to the 46. Five straight line plays carried to the Longview 20 then Hays decided to pass - but the toss was intercepted by Pakenham to be returned from his own 12 to Tyler's 24. Following a Longview punt, Tyler was once more on the march and they had the ball on the Lobo 38 at the end of the third quarter.

Hays started hitting his receivers with alarming precision at the start of the final 12 minute quarter. He flipped to Koen for a first down on the 34, then nailed Knight with a bullet toss on the 26. He ran for a first down on the Lobo 23 and handed off to Koen who scampered 9 yards to the Longview 14. Menasco, who was magnificent on the defense, threw Smith for a one yard loss and Hays pass fell incomplete.

Then Hays threw a completed pass to Koen on the 10 yard line and the Lion rooters began to yell for a touchdown. But on the next play from scrimmage, Hays dropped back and shot a pass toward the Longview goal evidently intended for Thompson, but Don Barton raced in from out of nowhere to snatch the ball on his own goal line and jitter-bugged 40 yards up field where he was spilled by Paul Beckman. That play took the heart out of the boys in Blue and they made only one other feeble stab at a score before the end of the ball game - but this rally was also broken up by the diminutive Barton who intercepted another of Hays asses to snuff out the fire.

At the final gun, Longview had marched from their 40 to the Tyler 21 in 5 plays.

Eaves was the man of the hour for Longview and shared the heroes role with Barton and Cashell. Menasco was the all-stater he had been cracked up to be all year and this coming Wednesday the brilliant Lobo center will be named to an all state post by the Dallas News.

He committed one flay in the ball gem when he sent a bad pass from center, flying pass Cashell, after Longview had marched tot he Lion 3 yard marker early in the contest. But the rangy pivot ace more than made up for that error by playing a terrific defensive game which saw him recover a pair of fumbles and stop enemy runners in their tracks on several occasions.

Hays, a substitute back during most of the season, was the spark plug in the Tyler second half attack. But for Bartons vigilance against passes, the unheralded Lion quarterback might have pitched Tyler to a triumph. Joe Ginsberg, hefty Smith county tackle, was the standout on the line for the invaders.

Algee Callahan, Jim Fuller Anglin and Terry also sparkled for the winners.
