LOBOS TAKE 7-0 VICTORY OVER KILGORE
LONGVIEW - Longview's punt and pray game paid off once more Friday night as the Lobos slipped by a powerful Kilgore aggregation by a 7-0 score before 8,500 screaming spectators at Lobo Stadium. The over-flow crowd, one of the largest ever to witness a Longview grid classic, packed all parts of the field and stood three deep in many instances.

Both teams made it known early in the ball game that the tilt would be decided by the breaks. It was a battle of he lines with the stalwart Longview forward wall - which has refused to allow a touchdown to be scored against it this year - finally getting the better of the deal.

The Longview "touch" came early in the third frame just seven plays after Kilgore kicked off to star the second half. Ed Cross penned the third period with a mediocre kick to Joltin' Jimmy Pakenham which the Jolter took on his own 22 and returned to the Lobo 44. The 185-pound Lobo fullback almost shook loose and there was only one man between him and the goal line when he hit the earth. Rex Stuckey stole a yard, then Pakenham bulled off tackle for four.

Stuckey gave the Lobos a first down when he pitched to Ed Roach on the Bulldog 42. After a pair of passes fell incomplete, Stuckey faded back and sent a long aerial down field intended for roach. The local wingman tipped the ball with his fingers. Jimmy Eubanks, the Kilgore safety man, touched it as it was falling to the ground and it landed in the hands of Amy Rogers, who gathered it in on the Kilgore 18 and outran Eubanks and Bain to the goal line.

Fox Cashell kicked the point, an that was the ball game.

Kilgore came back with a passing attack which was led by 200-pound fullback Jack Hones. After Bain, a 140-pound speedster, shook loose for an electrifying 15 yard dash, Buddy Terry broke up the Bulldog threat by intercepting a Hones pass on his own 47. That was as far as the visitors got in the third quarter and up until late in the final period they were held completely in check.

The final two minutes of the ball game sent the fan's bloody pressure sky-rocketing as the Bulldogs tried desperately to score. Pakenham kicked into the end zone attempting to place one in the coffin corner, and the invaders took possession on their own 20. Hones completed a 32-yard aerial to Bain, then a six yard advance by Bain, cupeled with a Longview penalty gave Kilgore a first down on the Lobo 35. Hones faded and tossed a long pass intended for Eubanks on the five, but Don Barton came from out of nowhere to intercept the toss and gave Longview the ball in the shadows of their own goal posts.

Pakenham picked up five yards, then kicked to Eubanks on the Green and White 45. Eubanks returned beautifully to the Longview 34. Hones hit Bain for a first down on the 21 and on the last play of the game the same combination tried to shoot one into the end zone, but Amy Rogers intercepted on the 3 yard line and ran the ball out to is own 34 as the gun sounded ending the game. Kilgore presented a tough forward wall which refused to crack. Jim Biggs and Ray Hill were the standouts for the lowers. Eubanks and Bain overshadowed the widely heralded Hones in the backfield.

Longview has an open date next Friday night, but entertain the potent Tyler Lions in a Texas headliner on November 1st. It is expected that another 8,500 persons will attempt to see that one.
