LOBOS SPLIT STUBBORN HENDERSON DEFENSE TO WIN 33-0
LONGVIEW - Fought to a standstill for two quarters, the unbeaten and unscored-on Longview Lobos split a stubborn Henderson defense wide open in the third and fourth periods to rack up their biggest score of the season - a one-sided 33-0 verdict over the Rus county Lions before 6,000 fans at Lobo Stadium Friday night.

Paced by the magnificent running of all-state candidate Joltin' Jimmy Pakenahm, the Green and White roared back from the brink of an upset to smash the Henderson defense to bits. The brilliant Longview forward wall gave up a mere 84 yards rushing and they alone deserve the credit for keeping intact that unscored on skein. Once more it was Algie Callahan, Don Menasco, Buddy Terry, Ed Roach, Jimmy Fuller and Eave and Bobby Anglin who refused to allow a score. A heads-up pass defense turned back Joe Skelton's bid for a touchdown via the aerial route.

Longview scored shortly after the start of the second quarter when Rex "Sling Shot" Stucky threw a six-point pass to Don Barton, who made a circus catch in the end zone. Fox Cashell kicked the point, and Longview led 7-0. For the remainder of the quarter, however, Henderson played the Lobos completely off their feet and held them to a puny 19 yards rushing.

But the third quarter found a completely revitalized Lobo eleven clicking off ground gaining plays with clock-like precision. Henderson drove to the Lobo 22-yard line immediately after receiving the second half kickoff. Skelton threw a big score into the Longview fans when he heaved a touchdown pass to Ed Warren in the end zone - only to have Warren drop the ball. After that, it was all Longview.

Pakenham and Cashell brought the ball from the Longview 41 to the Lion 33 in five plays. Ed Roach galloped to the 15 on an end around, then the winners were penalized for offside. Pakenham and Rogers made it first and goal to go on the 10, then Joltin' Jimmy crash through a beautiful hole off tackle to score standing up.

The try for the point was no good, and Longview had to wait three minutes for their next score which came with the help of a recovered Henderson fumble. Once more it was Pakenham who sparked the drive as he slashed downfield for 10 big yards to the Lion 29-yard marker.

Jack Serpass, playing the greatest game of his high school career, slipped throughout he line for 9 yards and Stuckey carried down tot eh 12 before a 15-yard clipping penalty set the Lobos back. Stuckey pitched a spot pass to Roach who lateral led to Serpass. Jack went over untouched, but the officials ruled that Roach threw a forward lateral and penalized Longview five yards more. That gave Longview possession on the Henderson 25. Pakenham carried twice and scored from the nine on the second try.

Skelton rocked the stands once more early in the final quarter when he passed 30 yards to Mowl who gathered in the toss on the Lobo seven and headed for goal. He was hit on the two yard line by Amy Rogers and fumbled. The ball rolled into the end zone and Longview recovered for an automatic touchback.

Henderson fell completely apart after that break, and the Lobos had the fourth stringers operating during a large part of the reminder of the game. Serpass set up the next score by interception a Skelton pass through a broken field before he was downed on the Lion 18. On the next play from scrimmage, Serpass carried 11 yards to the enemy 7. Pakenham jolted down to the 1 yard stripe and substitute halfback Jimmy Nelson went over standing up.

Fox Cashell tallied the final touchdown two plays later when he intercepted a Skelton pas on the Lion 35 and raced the distance to the goal.
