LOBOS OVER POWER GREENVILLE'S LIONS 16-0
LONGVIEW - The Longview Lobos powered their way to their fourth consecutive win of the year by crushing a determined Greenville bid for an upset before 5,500 fans at Lobo Stadium Friday night. The score was 16-0, and kept the Green and White's goal line uncrossed.

Figured to win by at least two touchdowns and probably four, the Lobos were hard pressed to pile up their 16 markers. After Rex Stuckey pitched to Ed Roach for Longview's initial touchdown midway through the first stanza, the Hunt county eleven threw up a goal line defense which thwarted the local scoring attempts on four occasions.

Longview's score came on a 35-yard aerial from the Sling-Shot to Roach, who gathered in the pigskin which was deflected slightly by Greenville safety man Don Sokell. Catching the ball on the enemy 15, Roach went over the goal line untouched. Fox Cashell, place kick artist, booted one squarely down the middle of the point.

Longview got as far as the Greenville 13 yard line immediately after the start of the second period when "Joltin' Jimmy" Pakenham cut off tackle for 30 yards. The visitors held for downs. Pakenham, who was running brilliantly Friday night, picked up 31 yards in three tries to give Longview a first down on the Greenville 4 moments later. The Lobos fumbled away the opportunity, and Jones kicked out of danger for the Lions.

They worked their way back to the Greenies 10 yard line on two more occasions before the end of the half, but couldn't score.

The third quarter was a see-saw affair which saw a 12-yard pass from Stuckey to Roach and a 10-yard dash by Pakenham give Longview a first and goal to go from Greenville's 10 yard marker, but once more they fumbled away the opportunity. The locals were terrific from the 50 to the 0 yard line, but they fell apart when they got in striking distance of the goal.

The Lions put the crowd on its feet shortly after the start of the fourth quarter. A bad punt by Jones gave Longview a first down on Greenville's 26-yard line. Bobby Harris worked his way down to the 6 then Pakenham picked up two for a first and ten on the 14. Stucky fumbled a high pass from center Don Menasco, and T.C. Jones, Greenie end, plucked the ball out of the air and headed for goal 84 yards away.

Don Barton closed the gap on Jones and at the Lobo 20-yard line it appeared as if Barton might cut the runner down, but Earl Goad, Greenville center, clipped Barton as he attempted to block him out for he play. Jones went on across but the touchdown was nullified at the point of the infraction and Greenville was penalized 15 yards to the Lobo 35. After three plays failed to pick up the necessary yardage, the Greenies kicked into the end zone and Longview took over on their own 20.

Following an exchange of punts, the high stepping Bobby Harris shook loose on a handoff from Pakenham and traveled 62 yards to the Lion's 20 yard stripe where he was forced out of bounds. On the next play from scrimmage, Pakenham went ploughing through a big hole in the center of the forward wall and crossed the goal line untouched. Once more the dependable Cashell boot the point.

Longview wound up the scoring parade with just 55 seconds remaining in the ball game. Once more it was Pakenham who set the stage for the score as he got off a sensational 51-yard kick which went rolling out of bounds on Greenville's three yard line.

Jones went deep into the end zone to kick out, but Buddy Terry rushed in to block the ball. Jones fell on the oval giving Longview an automatic two points, and that was the ball game.

Despite their inability to run up a score, the locals clicked for 300 yards on the ground as compared to 65 for the visitors.

They meet Texarkana in the district opener for both clubs in the Border City next Friday night.
