LOBOS UPSET PORT ARTHUR, 2-0
LONGVIEW - In a ball game which went down on the record as one of the biggest upsets scored in the state Friday night, Longview's stout hearted Lobos - 14 point underdogs at game time - grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes of play against Port Arthur, then settled down to the job of fighting off all enemy attempts to cross their goal line.

A wind which roared at near hurricane force, and rain which poured down in blinding sheets played a prominent part in the outcome of the contest.

Longview received Jack Day's opening kickoff on their 12 yard line, with Amy Rogers returning 18 yards to the Lobo 30. Rex Stuckey attempted a long pass to Don Barton, but it fell incomplete. With the wind at his back, Joltin' Jimmy Pakenham quick kicked into the end zone. The Jackets' Don Parker made two yards through the line, then the visitors were penalized five yards for offside. Parker's punt sailed upfield only six yards, and Rogers brought it back to the enemy 30. After rushes by Pakenham and Stuckey failed to pick up a first down, Longview punted back to the visitors.

After three straight plays failed, Parker attempted to punt out of danger on his own 11 yard line. Captain Buddy Terry rushed in from his right end post and blocked the kick which rolled out of the end zone and past the goal posts for an automatic two points for the Green and White. That ended the scoring for the night, and both teams settled down to play for the breaks which never showed up.

Port Arthur made their most serious bid of the game late in the second period. After Pakenham, kicking into the 50-mile-an-hour wind, booted out of bounds on the Lobo 36-yard stripe, Parker tore off five yards on a dash around the left side of the stubborn Lobo line. Lawrence Huckaby picked up a yard before running into Bobby Anglin.

A backfield in the motion penalty moved the Jackets back tot he 22, but the visitors moved up to the Green and White 15 on a quick pass. Then, Parker faded back and tossed a strike to end Gene Rogas who was standing in the end zone. Rogas clutched the ball, fumbled it momentarily, grabbed it once more then watched the slippery pigskin slide from his grasp onto the turf for an incomplete pass. Had Rogas held that pass, there is little doubt that the final score would had been in Port Arthur's favor.

Vicious tackling by the Longview forwards led brilliantly by All-State candidate Don Menasco kept the heralded Port Arthur backs to a minus six yards rushing In the meantime, the bull-like rushes of Joltin' Jimmy Pakenham kept the Lobo offense alive at all times. Amy Rogers turned in a remarkable job in the safety position, while Algee Callahan sparkled at his tackle post.

The Lobo line in particular was especially outstanding. The guard position, rated as the Achilles Heel of the Longview defense, showed up nicely - but it was clearly evident that Longview must learnt o block if they are to continue the winning skien which started against Palestine tow weeks ago. The failure to block properly cost the Green and White precious yardage on many occasions.

The elements seemed to affect Port Arthur more than they did the Lobos. The boys from the Gulf Coast made five costly fumbles which slowed up their attack considerably, while the locals muffed the ball on two occasions, but recovered both times.

For Longview, Roach and Terry at ends, Anglin and Callahan in the tackle slots, Fuller and Eaves the guards and Menasco at center were especially noticeable. Cashell, Rogers, Stuckey, Serpass, Harris and Pakenham stood out in the backfield.
