LOBOS WALLOP PALESTINE, 19-0, IN OPENER
LONGVIEW - Completely smothering the opposition in very department of the ball game, Longview's Lobos experienced little difficult in taming the Palestine Wildcats by a 19-0 margin. Paced by the blitzkrieg tackles of their crushing fullback - Joltin' Jimmy Pakenham - and the bulls eye passing of Rex Stuckey, the green and white wrote their own ticket Friday night.

What was most pleasing to the 5,500 fans who packed the stadium by capacity, was the stubborn resistance put up by the Lobo forward wall. Statistics show that Palestine as able to chalk up only one first down for the entire evening, and they gained only 25 yards via rushing. Their pass offense was even more impotent in that they were able to complete only one aerial for a mere six yards.

The Longview offense clicked beautifully during gate first three quarters, but the boys - playing in a summer heat - tired late in the game and bogged down.

A quick kick by Pakenham set the stage for Longview's first break. The boot sailed over the head of the Palestine safety man and died on the visitors' 17 yard line. When Blunt muffed a lateral, the ball bounced crazily to the 'Cats 7 yard marker. "Cowboy Jim" Fuller was on it like a hawk and recovered for Longview. Pakenham took a vicious crack at the center of the line and brought the ball just inches from the goal. On his second attempt, the "Jolter" sailed into pay dirt.

Palestine never threatened seriously, and were never inside the Lobo 25 yard line. Immediately following their first quarter score, the green and white went out in search of their second touchdown. Midway through the second period Pakenham went back to midfield in kick formation and angled one out of bounds on the Wildcat three yard line. Kennedy immediately returned the punt, which went out of bounds on his own 45 yard line.

At this point, Rex Stuckey unleashed some of the finest passing ever displayed in Lobo Stadium. After Jim Pointer broke loose for seven yards, Stuckey lobbed an aerial to Ed Roach good for a first down on the 'Cat 33. After a five yard penalty for offsides set them back five yards, Rex put the Lobos in scoring position by hitting Buddy Terry with a long pass which gave the locals a first down on the enemy 10 yard line.

Pakenham smashed his way down to the four with three players hanging on his body, then Gene McClain ripped around the left side of the line on a beautifully executed end-around-end play for the score. Stuckey split the crossbar for the extra point and it was 13-0 at the intermission.

Pakenham's kicking put Palestine in the hole shortly after the start of the third quarter, but Longview fumbled away their lone scoring opportunity. Pointer almost shook loose on a 15-yard punt return, but the 'Cats dug in and held.

On the first play of the final quarter, Stuckey pitched a strike to Tommy Kent - a reverse back - which carried from the Palestine 18 to the enemy five. A backfield in motion penalty gave Longview a first down on the nine, then Pakenham went over standing up in two tries. The kick was wide and that was all the scoring for the night.

Don Menasco, brilliant Longview center, played his usual standout defense game for the winners, but was forced to retire from the game in the third period with a slight injury. Allee Callahan was a block of granite at his tackle post, while the visitors were able to penetrate the right side of the Lobo line. "Amy" Rogers was outstanding on the punt returns.
