KILGORE'S JIM CANTER BEATS LOBOS
KILGORE - Big Jim Canter, Kilgore's highly regarded backfield star, lived up to his press notices here Friday night as he almost single handedly sent the Longview Lobos reeling from the 11-AA league leadership. Canter ran the Green and White dizzy for three quarters and set up Kilgore's 6-0 victory with a coffin corner kick which the Bulldogs parlayed into a touchdown.

The Maroon girders had things pretty much their own way right from the kickoff. They drove deep into Longview territory the first time they gained possession of the ball and at halftime it was very evident that the high riding Lobos were heading for a fall. Kilgore chalked up the only tally of the game when Canter opted a lazy spiral from his own 38. the ball rolled down to the Lobo two yard line and died. Johnny Rogerson, playing the ball cautiously, stood waiting for the officials to declare the ball dead, but suddenly Don Barton came from out of no-where to throw a block on Jack Munley, the Kilgore end who came down to cover the play. In block out Munley, Barton accidentally kicked the ball and Kilgore recovered giving them possession on the Green and White's two-yard stripe.

After Hones was stopped cold on a center plunge by Jimmy Pakenham, Wendell Graves and Don Menasco, quarterback Fox crossed up the Lobos by crashing over right guard to score on a sneak play. The try for point after was wide.

For a moment, the Longview fans thought they might witness a replica of the Henderson-Lobo thriller as Rogerson and Barton ripe off huge gains which carried down to the Maroon 12 yard marker. But Kilgore was not to be denied as they stiffened and held for downs. Barton missed a beautiful chance to tie up the ball game when he allowed one of Jack Serpass' tosses to slip through his fingers 10 yards from the goal line.

The this quarter was a sea-saw affair which saw both teams battle on even terms. Canter was a continual throne in the side of the Longview aggregation as he ran, passed and kicked the Lobos silly. He met his match in Don Menasco however, and when the two collided at the line of scrimmage, the big red head fumbled and had to be helped from the playing field. Menasco recovered the ball and Longview took over on their own 47 yard line.

After Amy Rogers passed the Lobos down to the Kilgore 18 via connections to Rogerson, Barton and Johnny Callahan, it seemed as if the league leaders were going to pull the game out of the fire. With four minutes of playing time remaining, Fox Cashell was sent into the fray and flipped a screen pass to Rogerson who carried six yards to the Kilgore 14. A line plunge picked up two yards and Rogerson cracked over guard one yard short of a first down.

It was here that quarterback Jack Serpass pulled a play which cost the Lobos a first down, and possibly the ball game. With one yard to go for a first down, Serpass elected to pass on fourth down. With Kilgore playing a seven man line, the strategy had possibilities of paying off, but the odds were great. He shot a pass into the flat intended for Barton, but Sutton batted it down and that was all for Longview.

The Lobos tangle with Tyler in their next engagement following an open date next Friday night.
