RUGGED PORT ARTHUR TEAM TROUNCES LOBOS
PORT ARTHUR - Completely outplayed, outfought, and outscored, the Longview Lobos went down to a 21-0 defeat before Port Arthur's well drilled football machine before 9,700 fans who packed Yellowjacket Stadium almost to capacity Friday night. Taking advantage of a series of Longview fumbles, the Baytown combine sewed up the ball game in first quarter via touchdowns by Huckaby and Babin.

Coach John Tomlin's hard charging line slowed the Lobo offensive unit down to a waltz and it was only against the Jacket third stringers that the Green and White could show any of the spark which carried them to an upset victory over Palestine a week earlier.

The Maroon and Gold went for a quick touchdown shortly after the kickoff when 187-pound Benny Ricardo shot a 35-yard pass to Huckaby, the latter outsprinting Amy Rogers the remaining 15 yards to the goal. A fumble by Rogers was picked up by Port Arthur a few minutes later and this too was converted into six points when Jack Babin, who was subbing for Ricardo, crashed over from two yards out. The Lobo forward wall, braced brilliantly by Wendell Graves, Don Menaseo and Jimmy Pinkenham held for three downs, but Babin squeezed through on the pay off

The second quarter was a drab affair which saw the invaders tossed back on their heels repeatedly. Johnny Rogerson picked up nine yards on one occasion when he took a fake kick from Fox Cashell, but the hard-charging Jacket forwards refused to permit a first down in the next three tries. Statistics at the half showed Port Arthur chalking up six first downs against none for the Gregg county club. Longview was held to a total of two yards rushing in the first two quarters.

In the face of all this disaster, one Longview player stood out consistently. He was Johnny Callahan, veteran Longview end, who was a one-man team on his end of the line. On several occasions, the lanky Lobo wingman reached or leaped over would-be blockers to toss the perplexed Yellowjacket ball carries for huge losses.

The second half opened with the home towers electing to kick off to Longview. Carl Tucker's placement sailed down to the five yard line where it was taken by Rogers. The rangy Lobo back returned it thirty yards to his own 35, where upon he was tackled viciously by a swarm of Yellowjackets and fumbled.

Port Arthur recovered and marched down to the two yard stripe, where MacDonald went over on fourth down. The six point drive was highlighted by Babin's 18 yard sprint over guard - setting the stage for McDonald's score. Tucker once more made good on the conversion, and Tomlin's crew completed their scoring for the night.

Maco Stewart, trying hard to find a combination which would put the Lobos back in the ball game, rushed Fox Cashell in to the battle with instructions to open a passing attack. The former Junior high school star flipped five successful aerials to the Callahan boys - each of them good for a first down and a drive to the Port Arthur 35-yard stripe.

It was here that the 'Jacket first string, which had been idle since the end of the first quarter, came roaring back into the ball game to put out the fire. An intercepted shovel pass put a quick end to the Lobo rally.

The Green and White plays host to Paris, 14-7 losers to Waxahachie Friday night, on the local grid this coming week. It appears doubtful that Algee Callahan will be on tap for the coming engagement, because he aggravated his knee injury against Port Arthur and had to be carried from the field.
