VISITORS GET TIE WITH LOBOS AFTER BEING UNDERDOG
LONGVIEW - Knute Rockne once said, "A team that won't be beat, can't be beat" - and never was the epitaph more in evidence than last Friday night on the local gridiron, when a hopelessly outclassed eleven from Henderson High played a favored Longview aggregation to a 7-7 standstill before 5,500 amazed spectators.

Taking full advantage of their one and only scoring opportunity, the visitors from Rusk county converted Joe Young's first minute fumble into seven points before the game was one minute old. The Lions kicked off to Sturdivant who brought the ball back 10 yards to the 20 yard line.

On the next play, Young hit the center of the line and fumbled. It was recovered by the visitors at that point and three plays later, co-captain Jimmy Maddox plunged over from the one, for the score. Arnold dropped back and made good the conversion, and the fans couldn't believe their eyes.

Longview came back strong on several occasions and had the ball with in the Lion's 20 five lines, but they never cold muster enough energy to put it over until late in the ball games. The locals completely outplayed Henderson, but the final score is the thing which counts and that looked bad for the Lobos.

The Green and White tallied on a 60 yard march from their own 40 yard marker. After Forman kicked to Sturdivant, the Lobos took over for keeps. A 20 yard march in two plays put the ball on the visitors 36. Dill picked up three on a push off tackle, then Joe Young made it first and 10 on the Henderson 25 as he slashed off left guard. It was Young again down to the eleven on a smash through right tackle. A short jab through right guard carried the oval to the 6 and Henderson was penalized down to the 1 yard line on the next play for offside. Then Dill took the pass from Buddy Attaway at center, calmly reversed it to Young who plowed into the line and scored.

Coach Shotwell substituted Bobby Southall for Johnny Callahan at that point, and Dill passed to Southall for the conversion. The score became 7-7, and although the Lobos threatened once more before the final gun, two 15 yard penalties and an intercepted forward pass cut short the last minute rally.

Henderson played a magnificent defensive game, especially when the Lobos penetrated their 20 yard line. They were content to hold on to the 7 point-lead they were able to pile up early in the contest. They never had a chance to threaten after the initial break as Joe Young's booming punts kept them well in their own territory. On one occasion in particular, Young got off a boot which carried from his own 30 and dropped dead on the Henderson 6.

Bobby Collier, Lobo left guard, was the outstanding man on the field Friday night, as he blocked, tackled and generally played one of the finest games of his career. Dill's passing was still sloppy in spots, but in all fairness to "Bobby Jack" it must be aid that he should have had more completions. On one occasion in particular he tossed a touchdown pass to Southall in the end zone only to have the latter allow it to go through his arms and fall incomplete.

The Lobos came out of the game in good physical shape, and will not go about the business of preparing for their second conference tilt of the '45 season which finds them traveling to Texarkana next Friday night to meet that cities hot and cold eleven which lost to Kilgore 7-6 their last time out.
