YELLOWJACKETS OUT LUCK LOBOS TO WIN 19-13
LONGVIEW - In one of the most outstanding exhibitions of wide open football ever presented at Lobo Stadium, the Port Arthur Yellowjackets nosed out Longview's mighty Lobos by a score of 19-13 in the last 12 seconds of the ball game.

An intercepted pass by Eugene Smiley - 185 pound fullback - turned the tide against the Green and White in the dying moments of a game which unfolded like a Hollywood thriller. The 7,000 fans came away from the stadium shouting the praises of both teams and all agreed the Lobos should feel no shame in losing that one.

The Jackets opened fast and went for their first score the first time they gained possession of the ball. After the Lobos kicked out of bounds on their own 42, it was just a matter of time before the Red and Gold were able to score.

Smiley picked up five on a plunge through center from Butard gained two off tackle. Rojo, who along with the Lobos' Bobby Dill turned the game into a "Battle of the Quarterbacks," gained two more before Smiley crashed through fora f first down on the 34.

Gains by Smiley and Handle gave the visitors their second first down in succession on the Lobo 23. The Lobos braced for three downs before Rojo connected to Smith on the 8. Once again the 1944 tried to pierce that forward wall, but it was no dice as far as the Lobo forwards were concerned.

On the fourth down, Rojo faded back and dropped touchdown pass to Brant Smith for a Yellowjacket score. Hammon converted and Port Arthur led 7-0.

The Lobos came back strong in the second quarter on a sustained drive which carried them from the visitors 42 to pay dirt. This was climaxed by some fancy passing by Bobby Dill who finally went over for the score on a beautifully executed quarterback sneak from two yards out. Numsen's try for the conversion was blocked, and Longview trailed 7-6 at halftime.

The Gulf Coast eleven gave the locals a scare in the third quarter when they marched 45 yards for a score soon after kickoff. With Rojo sparking the drive on the strength of that potent throwing arm, the Jackets went the remaining distance to the goal in exactly six plays.

A 30-yard toss from Rojo to Brant Smith highlighted the effort and set the ball up in scoring position. After three line plays gained a total of three yards for the invaders, they reverted to air power once again and this time a Rojo to Martin combination from six yards out gave the Champs a 13-6 advantage. Hamman's kick was low.

The Lobos showed they were a fighting team however, a nd they refused to be licked. After Hamman kicked off, Joe Young bulled his way back 14 yards to the Longview 44. Joe Sturdevant picked up five yards on an off tackle smash and the Lobo fans started to yell for a touchdown.

Bobby Dill took mattes into his own hands at this point, and tased five perfect strikes to the Callahan brothers to set the ball in scoring position. First came a 14-yard toss to Johnny Callahan on the left side, which was followed by a 10-yard pitch to brother Algee around the right flank. Then another to Johnny which ate up 12 more yards as the Lobos moved to the visitors 10. A five-yard offside penalty against Port Arthur set the ball only five precious yards away from the touchdown territory.

After three line plays had brought the oval one and a half yards short of the goal, the quarter ended and the teams changed goals.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Joe Sturdevant took a lateral from Dill and smashed over for the score after he shook off three vicious attempts to cut down short of a touchdown. Bobby Collier dropped back from his guard position and converted for the extra point and the score was tied up at 13 all.

At this point, both teams threw caution to the wind and it was very evident that both quarterbacks were determined that this ball game would not end in a tie score as far as they were concerned.

After Longview kicked off, the Jackets carried as far as the Lobo 46 before they lost the ball on downs. This was a break for the Lobos and the fans were yelling themselves hoarse urging the Green and White to wrap up the ball game. But the fates were definitely not riding with the locals Friday night, because Howard White, who was subbing at center for the injured Buddy Attaway, let loose with a bad pass from center which went sailing over Dill's head and when the smoke had cleared, Dill had been thrown for a 30-yard loss.

Bobby made up 15 yards of it on a toss to Algee Callahan, then Joe Young kicked down to Rojo on the Port Arthur 18. Rojo returned the punt 23 yards to his own 42, and after a running play had lost 5 yards, he tossed an aerial bomb 19 yards to Smith and once again Port Arthur was in Longview territory.

Smiley picked up five yards through center, then Bobby Dill intercepted Rojo's toss on the Big Green's 35 and squirmed seven yards up the field before he was brought down by five of the opponents.

Ben Moore faded way out to the night and Dill shot him an aerial which if completed would have been a sure touchdown for the Lobos, but Moor was over anxious and dropped the ball. Three plays later came the ill-fated interception which spelled disaster for Longview, as Smiley gathered in Dill's toss on the 50-yard and ran the remaining distance to the goal behind terrific blocking.

The try for the extra point was blocked and the game ended at that point in favor of the Yellowjackets.
