LOBOS SHOW STRENGTH IN SMOTHERING NACOGDOCHES
LONGVIEW - Presenting a power-packed line which is capable of shaking loose their ball carriers when the chips are down, the 1945 edition of the Longview Lobos looked like a team to be reckoned with this fall as they completely overwhelmed and outclassed but definitely didn't out fight the aggregation wearing the Black and Gold of Nacogdoches High, by a score of 21-0 Friday night.

Longview went to work immediately after the opening kickoff and emerged with a 14-0 lead before the first quarter had ended. The Golden Dragons won the toss and decided to receive. Bobby Collier's kick went down to Muckleroy on the visitor's 14-yard line. and the speedy halfback returned it 33 yards to his own 46-yard line.

For a minute it appeared that he would score as he raced by several of the would-be Lobo tacklers, but he was finally brought to earth four yards short of the midfield stripe. The visitors then lost 10 yards in three tries at that staunch Lobo forward wall and McMullen was called upon to punt. He got off a very poor kick which went out of bounds on the 50 yard line and the Green and White took over.

Nine plays later they had the ball on the Dragon's one-yard line where Bobby Dill took it over for the score on a beautifully executed quarterback sneak. Big George Numsen dropped back from his tackle post to convert for the extra point and Longview went ahead by a score of 7-0.

Collier kicked off once more for the locals and McMullen returned it from the 20 to his own 38 yard line. Watson picked up four more yards on a plunge through center where he ran up against an immovable force in co-captain Buddy Attaway. On the next play, the Dragons sent Muckleroy back in pass formation and his toss which was intended for Lowery was intercepted by the alert Ben Moore and the 124 pounder scooted 50 yards for the score behind excellent blocking. once again Numsen dropped back for the kick and made good. Thus, almost before the fans had a chance to settle back in their seats, the Green and White was enjoying a neat 14-0 lead.

The Nacogdoches eleven came back determinedly in the latter part of the second half and drove down to the Lobo 10-yard marker for their only real threat of the game. They uncovered a shifty performer in Muckleroy who ran, passed, and punted the Lobos back to the shadows of their goal posts in the second canto. A clipping penalty helped the visitors along as the locals were penalized half the distance to the goal for this serious infraction of the rules. They were finally stopped at the 10 however, and the East North street outfit finished out the quarter in fine style as Joe Young spearheaded an attack which carried the Lobos to the Nacogdoches 16 yard stripe before the Dragons regained possession of the ball.

Young ran from a fake kick formation which completely baffled the visitors. He would sweep first along the left side, then the right in gains which ran from ten to thirty yards at a clip. Joe Tom Sturdevant came through for several important gains in the Longview drives and looms as a man to watch in future games this season.

The Dragons kicked off to start the third quarter and the Lobos returned it thirty yards to the 42 yard line. Moore went off tackle for five yards whereupon the Green and White fumbled on the next play and Nacogdoches recovered.

After two Muckleroy passes were incomplete, the Lobos were penalized half the distance to the goal for clipping and Nacogdoches had the ball on the Lobo 25 yard line, but that's as far as they went as Hibben, Algee, John Callahan, George Numsen and Glenn Johnston stopped the attack cold. After Young had brought the ball downfield almost single-handedly with a series of off-tackle charges, Joe Tom Sturdevant carried it across from the six yard line on a cross-buck which saw him take the ball from Bobby Dill. Numsen converted once again to close the scoring for the night and the Lobos led by a 21-0 count.

The Green and White piled up 11 first downs as compared to only three for the Dragons. Nacogdoches presented one of their finest teams in recent years and had several outstanding players in Muckleroy, Byrd and Sandlin. The latter two mentioned were in on almost every tackle made on the line. For Longview, the line was especially outstanding with Attaway and Numsen for the especially brilliant Joe Young who was the greatest back of the night and in all, the Lobos look like an all around good team this fall.

They play the state champions from Port Arthur here next Friday night and if they can get by the Gulf Coast eleven, they will definitely become a contender this season.
