BEARS THROW SCARE INTO LOBOS BUT LOSE, 27 TO 12
LONGVIEW - Scoring on the sixth play of the game for the fastest touchdown made against the Lobos this season, the Gladewater Bears romped eighty yards, with Dauphin crashing over from the one yard mark, but the Lobos came back strong to tally once before the quarter ended, once in the second quarter and twice in the third to finally win out 27 to 12.

The visitors added another marked in the final period, when coach Pete Shotwell had several substitutes in the game as they made a sustained drive of fifty yards to complete their scoring. Both the Bears' attempts at the extra point failed.

Abie Aycock and Joe Young combined to produce the Lobos first points just before the first period ended as Joe Young quick-kicked a beautiful 61 yard boot to the Gladewater 1 yard line. After the Bears were held to the one foot line on two plays, Owens punted out to Abie on the 36 and he returned it 17 yards to the 19.

On the first play, Joe started off right tackle, stepped back a couple of yards and sprinted around right end for a tally without a Bear touching him. Mason Gooding, who played a fine game despite a hip injury, place-kicked the first of his three placements to put the Lobos in the lead 7 to 6.

Art Rowland, Abie, Joe, Warren Poe and Bobby Dill joined hands to ring up the second Lobo marker, with Bobby taking a reverse from Aycock on the six and running wide around left end to score standing up. Gooding added the extra point to make the scoreboard read 14 to 6.

Shortly after the third quarter started, Young and Aycock repeated their first quarter effort when Joe planted another of his quick-kicks on the Bear 2-yard line this time for a 57-yard punt again.

Then as Owens kicked out to the Bears 41, Abie took it, eluded several tacklers and waltzed over easily for the third marker. Gooding failed to kick goal. The score at this point was 20 to 6 in the Lobo book.

The Bears took the next kickoff and made two first downs before being forced to kick. Then when Owens did punt, rampaging Abie, on the first play from scrimmage, from punt formation, picked his way nicely around left end, behind perfect interference by his backfield mates, headed down the left sideline and reached the Bear 35 when this everything on the field Owens was about ready to crack down on Ambling Abie, but right behind Aycock was Buddy Attaway, who promptly and with neat dispatch, laid the would-be tackler low and Abie continued on his 79-yard march for the final Lobo score of the game and the season.

The Bears scored late in the final period as they rang up a series of first downs, culminating a fifty yard drive with C. Johnson going the final foot needed to tally.

It was a fitting climax to a better than expected season for the Lobos, who ended up with eight games won and two lost, one to Marshall and the other to Port Arthur.

About 3,000 fans saw the game, played in perfect weather, and the hard tackling and blocking of both teams made it an interesting one to watch, even though many of the plays were of the hard-raising type.
