LOBO SPARK LEADS TO 14-7 VICTORY OVER TYLER
TYLER - Coach Pete Shotwell's fighting Lobos came through with a shinning victory over Tylers undefeated Lions Friday night in a football game played at Tyler before over 8,000 wild eyed fans, as Longview played a great defensive game, engineered two sustained drives of 80 and 61 yards in the second quarter to win 14-7.

Abie Aycock's passing and running, Rowland's running, Young's line smashing and the pass snagging of Dill, Brown and Poe, spelled defeated for the Lions. Late in the second quarter for an exchange of punts found the Lobos on their own 20 from where they started their first march. Co-Captain Art Rowland made 10 to the 30. Joe Young made 6 over right tackle at the end of the quarter. Abie passed to Brown for a first down on the 43.Young made 8 more at left tackle. Abie passed to Dill for 17 yards. Rowland added 2 on a plunge at left guard. Young cracked through o the 21 for another first down. Abie added 9 around right end. He then dropped back to pass and was thrown for a 10 yard loss as his receivers were covered.

His pass to Poe was a bit long, but he dropped back from the 22 to the 33 and planted a beautiful spiraling pass into Bobby Dill's arms in the end zone as Spoon and Paine reached vainly in their effort to bat it down, a forty-yard heave. Marion Gooding place-kicked the extra point to put the Lobos in the lead 7 to 0.

The Lions lost little time in tying it up as the speedy Bobby Paine took Gooding's kickoff and returned it 30 to his 46. Paine and Spoon made a first down on the Lobo 42. On the next series of downs the Lobos held and Paine kicked to the Lobo 11. The latter declined a Lion offside penalty on the play. On first down several Lions broke through to block Young's attempted punt, tackle Andretta falling on the ball for a touchdown. Kay place-kicked the extra point to even the matters at 7 to 7.

Bobby Dill started the Lobos off on their winning touchdown as he took the ensuing kickoff on his 18 and ran to the 39. Young hit right guard for 2 and Aycock followed with a nice run of 26 yards to the Lion 37. On third down Poe took Abie's pass on the 30 and went 5 more yards before going down. Ben Brown then grabbed another Aycock pass over his shoulder and dropped out of bounds on the 5.

Abie then went off right tackle a foot short of a score, but Rowland followed up with the touchdown over right guard and Gooding, with Rowland again holding spliced the post for the game's final point to give the Lobos a 14 to 7 advantage which maintained.

The highly sparked Lobos held the highly touted Howard Parker to a minus 17 yards in the first half, during which he was thrown for losses on 26 yards by line coach Joe Wet's strong line and splendid backing by Young, Attaway and Dill. However in the third period, Parker came out with fire in his eyes as he ripped off gains aggregating 84 yards and the longest of which was one run of 25 yards and though held for no gain twice, did not lose another yard. His total for the night was 93 yards gained and 26 lost in 20 tries for a 3.3 average. On defense, Parker was used at left guard where he played a good game.

Joe Young fared well in comparison with his 204 pound opponent as he piled up 64 yards on 16 tries with only 1 yard loss for a 3.1 average.

Two costly fumbles by Bobby Paine who despite these lapses played a fine game . He played havoc with Parker's gains as on these two occasions one of the bobbles was recovered by big Bob Brousard and the other by Rowland.

The Lions penetrated the Longview 30 only on these two drives, reaching the 29 and the 27, and too much can't be said for the play of the Lobo line from end to end, including Shotwell's only replacements at the tackles and at one end. The backfield and linemen Brown, Gooding, Attaway and McGaw played the entire game as coach Chad Davidson, though using only five subs, kept interchanging them continually but to no avail.

Guard Clarence McGaw stood out in the Lobo line despite the excellent play of his mates, taking a special delight in clinging to the heavier Parker. Rowland's signal calling was well near perfect as he called the plays perfectly on their two touchdown drives.

For the Lions, besides Parker, Paine, Andreetta and the little 150 pound redhead, Kirby Price. He did a splendid job of line backing.

It was a magnificent win for the Lobos and they fully earned and deserved it as the statistics will show. The Lions tried only one pass during the first half and five in the second, completing two, one for 8 and the other for no gain. On the other hand, Abie Aycock found the mark six times out of ten attempts, the shortest of which was 11 yards, the longest being his touchdown throw to Dill for 22 yards from scrimmage, making a total of 96 yards.

In rushing, the Lobos held a distinct advantage, 265 to 171.

Penalties threatened to mar the Longview chances of being tied or defeated as they lost 76 yards through this medium, one of which a man in motion set back, costing another score when Abie Aycock scampered 38 yards, only to have the play called back. Of especially significance, in spite of that loss, a beautiful blocking job by Mullikin down on the 15 enabled Abie to go the distance.

It was a very hard fought game, played cleanly throughout, without a single injury, which speaks well for the coaches of both teams.

Now for the game of the century. Next Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., at Lobo Stadium, the Marshall Mavericks, with whom the locals are tied for the District 11-AA title will be the opponents. One of the largest crowds in Lobo history is expected to view the game.
