TYLER SCORES BIG UPSET BY BEATING LOBOS, 2 TO 0
LONGVIEW - A tough, scrapping - and underrated - Tyler High line rose up to bat one of Jimmy Blakeley's punts back into his face early in the second period, then nailed him in the Lobo end zone with it for a safety and the only points of the game as the Blue and White Lions tossed a 2-0 upset into the state schoolboy picture yesterday afternoon in Lobo Stadium.

It was almost a packed house that looked on as these two ancient rivals collided, and though the handwriting on the wall began to show by midway of the third quarter, the large crowd was still a little stunned by the turn of events after Coach Chad Davidson's team made the two-point lead stick.

The Lions kicked off to the Lobos to open the second half and set the stage for the matter. Two plays from scrimmage left the Lobos still far short, so Blakeley dropped back to punt. Richardson and Brooks broke through and blocked it, and the agate trickled back into the end zone. Blakeley raced back to retrieve it but the Lions nailed him back there for a safety.

The Lions had one more scoring chance but failed to cash it in. Following the free kick, which was returned to the Lobo 28 by the Lions, the Blue boys got hot and carried it right down to the Lobo half yard line before losing it on downs.

Everybody in the ball park knew that Blakeley was going to punt on first down - everybody but Blakeley. He dropped back as if it kick, then fired a pass down the middle to Bert Bovines, who was finally hauled down by the surprised Lions on the Lobo 28. On the next play, Blakeley tied to pass, found his receivers covered and ran down the right sideline for 54 yards to the Tyler 18.

It looked as through the Wolves might be roaring back into the form that had carried them to seven straight wins. But two running plays and a couple of incomplete passes ended the drive on the Lion 18, where the ball went over on downs.

The first quarter was played in Lion territory altogether and the second in Longview's end of the lot. Neither team showed much stuff inside the opponent's 30. The difference was in the Lions' hard charging line and the failure oft he Lobo forwards to block at crucial moments.

Several times the Wolves shook runners into the clear but downfield blocking was noticeable by its absence.

The results leave Marshall and Tyler unbeaten in District 11 play. Marshall meets the Lobos Nov 19 and Tyler on Thanksgiving Day. Wins in both games would leave the Cavs with a clear claim to the title but a loss to either would snarl up the works.

Blakeley and Bovines bore the brunt of the Lobo offensive work while Grigg, Boyland, Dunaway, Raney and Johnson looked good defensively.

The Lion standouts were Johnson, Brooks and Norris.
