LOBOS OVERWHELM PURPLES THROUGH AIR, 20 TO 7
BEAUMONT - The Longview Lobos stole Beaumont High School's thunder here Saturday afternoon, striking through the air lanes with a dazzling passing attack to bump the Royal Purples by a 20-to-7 count.

While 2,000 fans set shivering in the bristling north wind, the two teams loosed their expert passers and before the issue was decided the fracas developed into an aerial battle.

The Purples, boasting their most spectacular passing material in history, saw the Lobos count in the opening quarter on a long heave from J.T. Jeffress to Crowley that netted 22 yards and a touchdown. Jeffress then connected with Arthur Rowland for the extra point.

Deserting their overhead game, the Lobos roared back to add their second tally in the following quarter on a sustained drive with Blakely, Berniel, Larson and Dunaway carrying the brunt of the ball toting. The march started from the Purples' 48, where a punt into the strong wind had been grounded. Dunaway counted with a smash at the middle from the five.

The Purples, using only three ground plays the entire first half, came back in the third quarter and threatened twice, but each time alert Lobo defenders halted to rally.

In the fourth stanza, Jimmy Johnson intercepted a Lobo pass and raced to the Longview 39. Odie Stewart, rated the best aerial artist ever to wear the purple and white, then fired to Clay Krames for twelve yards to the 27. Johnson passed to Anthony Cascio, who was downed on the Lobo 11, and then the Purples took the wraps off still another chunkier. Stan Hazelwood, a southpaw, sent the touchdown heave straight into the arms of Krames. Stewart passed to Krames for the extra point.

The Lobos scored their third touchdown on a freak play, after passing their try to the Purple 24. Blakeley threw to Milton Pearson but the ball bounced off a Purple halfback into the waiting arms of a Lobo tackle. Dean Sanford faced 18 yards for the final tally. Larson kicked the extra point from placement.

The game was unusually rough, with three Lobos being expelled from the game for disorderly conduct. All told, the Lobos drew 95 yards in penalties.

First downs favored Longview to 11 to 7.
