| LONGVIEW - Herman Cowley's fleet Sunset Bisons waited a quarter to get up a full head of steam here Friday night then rolled over the Longview Lobos, 27 to 7, in an interdistrict battle before a small crowd of half-frozen fans. It was the Wolves' second straight 20-point defeat in Lobo Stadium.
An interception of Lonnie Clark's pass on the Lobo 45 by Bill Blackburn started the Bisons to their first score. Only about three minutes of play in the first half remained. But it was sufficient. Blackburn and Kemble began wearing out the Lobo line alternatively for from 4 to 11 yards per try, Kemble finally crashing over from the 6. His attempted conversion was no good. A Lobo fumble opened the gate early in the second half and the Bisons charged through again. On the second play from scrimmage Jeffires fumbles on the Wolves' 14 and Jim Hobb, big Bison wingman, pounced on it. Blackout center for three, Kemble sloughed through for 5 and a Lobo roughing penalty put the ball on the 1. Blackburn went over for the marker and Kemble converted for a 13-to-0 lead. In the same period the Lobos counted their only points when little J.T. Jeffress, 120 pound halfback, intercepted a long pass from Kemble on the Lobo 38 and ran it back 62 yards for a touchdown. Clark converted the extra point. But the 7 point only served to irritate the Bisons. They took the succeeding kickoff and scored without relinquishing the ball. Kemble returned it to the Sunset 48. Kemble got 12 and Blackburn 13 to the 27. Kemble got seven in two tries, then Hunter lost six. On the fourth down Kemble passed to Hamman on the goal line for a touchdown and Kemble converted. Sunset's final marker came in the middle of the final period when John Hamberger recovered the lateral part of a forward-lateral pass which Charles Freudiger attempted after taking a short forward from Jeffress. The big Bison tackle covered the free ball on the Lobo 22 and Couch made 5, then 13 yards to the 4. On third down couch took it over for the touchdown and Ned Welch, through with contact play this year because of a broken wrist, went in for one play and converted the extra point. The speedy, hard-charging Bison backs were too tough for the Lobo guards and tackles and then riddled the line all night. Couch and the Blackburn boys, particularly the elusive Bill, were never stopped consistently. Jeffress turned in some good runs for the Lobos but his mates' blocking was spotty and only on the line plunge was he able to hit the open field and turn on the heat. |
