LOBOS BATTLE PORT ARTHUR TO SCORELESS TIE
PORT ARTHUR - Their best performance of the year behind them in a 0-0 tie played Friday in Port Arthur, the Longview Lobos will start preparations to open their conference season here this week with the Athens Hornets.

The clubs clash Friday at 8 p.m. and the new scale on tickets will be in effect.

The Lobos collectively and individually turned in good defensive performances Friday night against the heavier Jackets and showed an edge in nearly all departments, except kicking. They out-rushed the home club and moved into scoring position twice, only to fall victims to the fine Port Arthur defense.

Port Arthur's one lone shot at six points ran afoul of the Wolves' fast-charging line and soured on the 20.

Both teams' tackling was fierce and sure. Several times backs on one team or the other would seemingly break loose for a long gain and about that time, bang - somebody had come up from somewhere and nailed him.

Another feature of the game, which has characterized the last five meetings of these two clubs coach by Pete Shotwell and Tom Dennis, was the absence of the roughness and shady tactics.

Only one penalty that would never happen again in a decade. A Lobo punt into the gale that swept the field fell short, behind a Lobo lineman who had gone down under the kick. He was waiting for it to fall in front of him and, when a halfback between him and the line of scrimmage caught it, the Lobo nailed him.

The trouble was that the receiver had signaled for a fair catch - and the kid hadn't seen the signal because his back was on the play.

There was this about it, however: He didn't ask anyone about ti before he charged in and knocked the receiver off his feet.

The Hornets battle will open the Wolves' conference schedule and only one more inter-district game remains on the Lobo slate - that with Sunset here on Halloween night.
