FAMBROUGH'S POWER SCORES VICTORY FOR LOBOS OVER BEARS
LONGVIEW - Longview high school's Lobo football team, which captain Don Fambrough powerhouse into a 13-6 district closing victory over Gladewater Friday afternoon there after Kenneth Murphy's passing and a number of good receivers had baffled them the first half, were today preparing to meet the Lufkin team Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Longview in bi-district Interscholastic League playoff.

The victory put Longview in a tie with the Tyler Lions, defending district champions, who, like Longview, lost one game during the past conference season.

An executive committee meeting of District 11-AA schools gathered Friday night at Superintendent F.C. McConnell's office in Gladewater, neutral to both Tyler and Longview, contenders for right to represent the district in the Interscholastic league playoff.

After a bit of open discussion with District Chairman S.B. Burk of Tyler presiding, by official action the Tyler and Longview representative, Mr Burk and Henry Foster, were excluded from consideration of the matter.

The two schools presented their respective cases to a committee of J. Taylor Nelson of Athens, H.W. Stillwell of Texarkana, E.N. Dennard of Marshall, Mr. McConnell of Gladewater and W.L. Dodson of Kilgore, who was chosen chairman.

After this committee had for nearly three hours considered two other methods of selecting a district champion, they compromised by reverting to coin flipping based on a program autoped by the executive committee of District 10-A as it was then known on September 15th, 1934 when athletic director C.N. Wilkerson of Longview made the motion and voted unanimously by the committee.

Settlement of the title was attempted by a five-man committee in executive session by: (1.) trying to pick the stronger of the two teams, but they were unable to agree, feeling there was not enough difference; (2) basing a decision on the fact that Longview had defeated Tyler, but three of the five termed this inconclusive since Tyler beat the team which beat Longview; and (3.) finally as a last resort compromise by flipping a coin at 10:20 p.m. Friday.

In the football game Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Longview, closing the season for Gladewater, the Bears resorted to aerial offensive due to the inability to handle the considerably heavier and more experienced Lobo line. It resolved into a Fambrough vs Murphy battle with Gladewater's triple-threat quarterback the winner in the first half and breaking about even all game.

Fambrough, 190 pound Longview halfback, carried the ball 31 times to gain 155 yards including two one yard line plunges for touchdowns. Murphy showed excellent poise in passing 36 times for 18 completions and 155 yards gained including one touchdown.

After a scoreless first half, Longview opened the third quarter with a big show of heft and power, and taking the ball early, drove 68 yards down the field on six plays, with Fambrough making a touchdown on the sixth snap. Fambrough place kicked the extra point with John Knox (Knotty) Bovines holding.

T.A. Scott opened Longview's second touchdown drive on the next kickoff by returning the ball to the 50 yard line where he, Famborugh and Archie Jones carried It on short jaunts until Scott Heaved a 38-yard pass to McDonald, an end, on Gladewater's 5. The captain score from there and his placement kick was wide.

Gladewater received the kickoff which went out of bounds on the 35 and passed their way right on down across the goal line with Joe Lowery adding one final first down with a four yard line plunge. The series of passes were set to Carroll, Major Conley and Dewey Jones, who received the last one for a four yard gain over the goal. Placement kick for point was wide, leaving the score 13-6. All scoring was in the third period.
