SAFETY IN THIRD QUARTER BRINGS HOME WIN
LONGVIEW - Safely over the second hump in a ten-game schedule - and the bumps are getting tougher as the year progresses - the Longview Lobos get down this week to preparing for the always strong Port Arthur Yellow Jackets, whom the Wolves beard in their own lair Friday night.

A special train is being planned for the trip to the coastal city, according to manager Grady Shipp of the local chamber of commerce, and the round trip faire will be $3.50, he said last night.

The route has not been decided on yet but two are being considered. One would go down on the Santa Fe, as the 1937 special did, and the other would go by Houston on the Missouri Pacific and thence to Beaumont and down to Port Arthur. Both rates will be the same.

The train will run if 250 tickets for it are sold, Shipp said last night.

Friday night the Lobos pushed over a safety in the early minutes of the third quarter and protected their lead to shade the Adamson Leopards of Dallas, 2 to 0, in gaining their second victory of the year.

It was the scrapping Adamson eleven that hooked up with the Lobos that night and only some great punting by Ed Worsham, some great defensive play by the line and line-backers and some hearty laughs, not smiles, heaped on the Wolves by Lady Luck, kept their heads out of the water.

Worsham's kicking was a big factor in the win but the boys that stopped a little speedster named Croft were the real heroes.

Croft gave the best one-man demonstration the wolves had looked at in years here with his beautiful punt returns and his gallant slashes through a lighter Lobo line than was superior to the bulky forwards in front of him.

He was never licked and he kept the Lobo line and secondary busy all night.

The Wolves' pass defense functioned well also and allowed only two Leopard aerials to connect. Meanwhile Worsham threw six completed passes to do the bulk of the Wolves' ground gaining.

Longview's lone tally came after a long Worsham punt and a 15-yard penalty against the Leopards for holding.

The penalty pushed the visitors back to their six and Meley went back to punt. His punt was met by three Lobo lineman and it dribbled out of bounds behind the goal line for an automatic safety that won the game.
