LOBOS REMAIN AS STATE POWER BY DOWNING SUNSET
LONGVIEW - What started out to be a wide-open ball game in which anything might have happened turned into a rout here Friday night when the Longview Lobos crushed Sunset High's Bisons 31-7 to remain in the select circle of undefeated and united clubs.

A 42-yard run through a broken field by Dick Miller, fleet Lobo halfback, late in the first quarter put the Wolves on their way and they were never headed, although a couple of sustained aerial drives took the Bisons deep into Longview territory late in the game.

Miller's run was behind perfect blocking, his brother Hardy taking out two Bisons on the 30-yard line and others blocking beautifully.

In the second quarter the Lobos capitalized on a short kick that they took on the Bison 35 and scored in two plays. Dick Miller circled right end for 20 yards and then Frank LeBus tossed a pass to Ray Cantrell that was good for a touchdown.

Early in the third quarter, after the Bisons took a punt on their 25, the visitors started a play around right end. Orenbaum, Bison halfback, attempted a lateral on his 35-yard line but it soured and Hardy Miller gathered it in. He ran the distance to the goal line for a touchdown after snatching the ball out of the air.

Here the Bisons opened up with a little spree that netted their only score. Taking the Lobo kickoff on their own 15, the Bisons made two first downs in a row and got to midfield. Smith, Buff quarter, swept left end for 23 yards. Orenbaum lateraled to Grost for 16 more, and then Grost circled left end for a touchdown. Orenbaum converted to run the tally to 18-7.

Hardy Miller returned the succeeding kickoff to the Lobo 37, and from there a pass, LeBus to Cantrell, netted 56 yards and carried it to the Sunset 7. From there Dick Miller hit left tackle for a score and Cantrell converted.

Longview's final tally came in the fourth period on the most thrilling play of the game. Don Fambrough, a freshmen halfback, intercepted a pass on his own 17-yard line and ran it back, almost unaided, 83 yards for a touchdown. That was all the scoring.

The Lobo defense proved tough in the clutches all night, despite the fact that the Bisons scored 15 first downs to 13 for the Greenies. Late in the game Sunset whipped the Wolves' ends to a frazzle, but each time an alert secondary ended the drive with a pass interception.

Longview's captains, Chal Daniel and Ted Brannon, continued to look like a million by stopping everything that came their way. Also Jack McMahan at center and Gene Richardson at tackle played fine defensive ball. The blocking of Hardy Miller, the passing and blocking of Dick Miller, and the blocking and pass-snatching of Cantrell also struck out.

For the Bisons Orenbaum, Grost and Smith in the backfield were the whole show. These boys continually eluded Lobo tacklers and kept up between them a series of lateral pass plays that kept the largest crowd of the season here on the edge of its collective seat all night.
