SPECIAL TEAMS PLAY BIG PART IN THRILLING LOBO WIN
ARLINGTON - Longview head football coach John King called Saturday's win "special."

And in that "special" victory, special teams played a big role in the outcome.

Those plays didn't always go in favor of the Lobos.

After Longview's first touchdown, the Lobos had a bad snap on the point-after attempt, and quarterback/holder Haynes King tried to pass for two points. The pass was incomplete. The touchdown, however, was set up by a 20-yard punt by Beaumont West Brook that gave the Lobos the ball at their own 42.

Following a Longview touchdown with 1:02 left in the first half, the Lobos set up for the extra point, but King took the snap and ran the ball into the end zone for an apparent game-tying two-point conversion. The play was called off by a false start, and the Lobos settled for a kick by J.K. Martin to cut the West Brook lead to 21-20.

With West Brook leading 28-26 in the third quarter following a Longview touchdown, the Lobos elected to go for two. King's pass was incomplete, but pass interference was called. The Lobos then gave the ball to Jessie Anderson, who was ruled to have crossed the end zone. After review, the call was overturned, keeping the score at 28-26.

After West Brook's only second-half touchdown, a bad snap sent Deonte Simpson scrambling to make a play, and his pass to the end zone was intercepted by Longview's Robert Pierce, making the score 34-29 with 11:34 to play.

Martin made a 28-yard field goal - his seventh of the season - to cut the score to 34-29 with 8:17 remaining.

After Longview took the lead with 4:42 left, the Lobos attempted a two-point pass, but it was intercepted by West Brook's Javan Rideau, who attempted to run it back before being tackled by Jessie Anderson.

"I was thinking that was the worst thing that could happen," John King said. "We were trying to make it a three-point game, and the kid made a great play."

That was the final special teams play in a game full of notable moments.

"They came up huge,"" John King said. "That was a big play by Robert to make it an 8-point game and then of course the field goal by J.K. was huge for us."
