JOHNSTON: KATY PLAYED UNBEATABLE FOOTBALL
HOUSTON - The Longview Lobos didn't play poorly, the Katy Tigers simply played unbeatable football, Katy head coach Mike Johnston said after his team became the top Class 5A Division I team in Texas.

"It wasn't so much Longview as it was our offensive line," Johnston said of his 24-3 victory. "They (the offensive line) controlled the tempo of the game. I thought they (Longview) played a great ball game."

The win was made more sweet by Johnston's memory of losing the game contest in 1994 to Plano.

"No doubt, this is the most fantastic feeling," he said. "This is about the fourth best thing that ever happened to me in my life."

Although he coach burst with pride for his offensive line, which averages 260 pounds, his first praise for a defense that held the unbeaten Lobos to a field goal. He said his defensive unit holding the score even at zero through the first quarter established its dominance.

"That's all our defense," he said. "They played their best game of the whole year."

Before hoisting the championship trophy a lot for Katy fans, Johnston uttered a final, happy prediction for the 1997 season:

"We're fixing to blow the roof off of Katy," he said, before his players carried both their coach and their trophy toward their sideline.
