STATE CHAMPION LOBOS TO SEE COTTON BOWL CONTEST
LONGVIEW - A trip to the Cotton Bowl game next Saturday at Dallas and a banquets on Jan 14, were planned Monday to honor Longview high school's state champion football team.

Members of the team that brought the state gridiron title to East Texas for the first time since interscholastic league playoff started, were the heroes of this oil town Monday.

The team defeated Wichita Falls, 19 to 12, Christmas Day in the Cotton Bowl at Dallas, to take the championship crown worn by Amarillo.

Longview went through 14 games without defeat or tie.

Wichita Falls proved the toughest opponent that the Lobos encountered during the season. Longview found itself trailing 12 to 0 at the end of the first period.

After the early period nervousness was over, the Lobo line held and Wichita Falls was unable to score again. The smooth backfield machine of Dick and Hardy Miller, Frank Lebus and Ray Cantrell then rolled across for three Longview touchdowns and a conversion.

This was Coach P.E. Shotwell's third state championship, having won it for Abilene in 1923 and tying Port Arthur in 1929 to give Breckenridge a share in it. Shotwell built Longview's title team in his third year in the East Texas city.
