DICK MILLER, CHAL DANIEL ARE ALL-STATERS
DALLAS - Dandy Dick Miller, Longview's "mighty mite," paced the Texas interscholastic league's football stars to the heights they all dream about Monday as he dominated the Associated Press' 1937 all-state team.

Miller, with votes for both quarterback and halfback, led in the balloting over Harold Fleming, Wichita Falls' preaching fullback, by a comfortable margin.

Eight teams are represented on the selection made by sport writers, assisted by coaches, from every section of the state. Wichita Falls placed three, Longview two and Waco, Port Arthur, Temple, Austin (El Paso), Lufkin and North Side (Fort Worth), one each.

Miller, 143 pound spark plug of the fine Longview team, got most of his votes at halfback, therefore was placed there. Fleming was nominated for halfback and fullback but got the majority of his ballots for the latter.

Never before has the voting been closer, especially among the ends, tackles and backs.

Joe Schwarting, Waco's 175 pounder, and Jesse Hawthorne, 173 pound star from Port Arthur, won the end posts after ra spirit battle with Otto Paul Burandt, Longview's brilliant star, Harold King of Amarillo and W. G. Blackmon of North Side.

Euel Wesson, Temple's 205 pound versatile performer, captured one tackle post. He got votes for tackle, quarterback, halfback, fullback and end, but most of his ballots were for the forward position. Wesson played defensive tackle, did the team's punting and was a terror when shifted to the backfield on offense. The other tackle is Pat Lowry, 160 pound goal kicking star of the Austin (El Paso) team. Edward Brand of Wichita Falls and Ted Brannon of Longview, were close behind.

Chal Daniel, Longview 185 pounder, and Arthur Gofrother, Wichita Falls' 179 pound defensive terror, tied in the voting for guard. Both were far ahead of the field. V. D. Basey of Austin and J. P. Matthews of Pampa were runners-up.

Odell Damerall, 169 pounder from Wichita Falls, captured the center post by a narrow margin over Jack MaMahon, Longview star.

As running maters for Miller and Fleming, Marshall Spivey, Lufkin's 162 pound death of lighting captured the quarterback position, and Danny Reese, North Side's all-around star, made the other halfback. Cam (Powder) Harrell, Conroe's great little back, was barely edged out of a place on the first time. Woodrow Bandro of Beaumont, Whitlock Zander of Jefferson (San Antonio) and Bob Brumley of Edinburg were other backs running close for first time places.
