| ROCKWALL - Rockwall's Yellowjackets won the bi-district championship here Friday afternoon by decisively debating the Longview Loboes by the score of 20 to 6. In earning the right to oppose McGregor in the regional championship game, the locals displayed a powerful running attack with a stubborn defense.
The hard running Rockwall backfield whipped the Longview ends to pieces and with an assortment of trick plays that would do credit to collegiate elevens the Yellowjackets jumped off to an early lead and managed to built it up as as the game progressed, despite a desperate passing attack by the visitors that continually threatened to put across a touchdown. Longview was materially weakened early in the game when the Loboes lost the survives of captain Wendel Harper who was forced to the sidelines with a badly injured left leg, which may be fractured and later Herman Harper was ejected from the contest. Rockwall flashed as near perfect a brand of interference as it is possible for a high school to exhibit in skirting the Longview wings with Charles Atkins lugging the ball. With wonderful blocking and an experienced carried the Yellowjackets offered an offense that could hardly be stopped by anything short of an experienced and heavy forward well. It was not until the final two minutes of play that the Loboes crossed the Rockwall goal line, the first time it has been done this season at Rockwall, when Paul Painter intercepted a Rockwall pass and sprinted 30 yards for a touchdown. Rockwall received and scored in the first two minutes of play. Wade plunged the line for nine yards. Atkins crushed over guard for a half dozen yards and as followed by Barnes for the same distance. It was probably the prettiest play of the game was executed perfectly for a touchdown. On a triple reverse end run Carl Smith, end, broke away around right end and sprinted 50 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. The second Rockwall counter came in the second period when a bullet pass for 30 yards from Jake Smith to Carl Smith was completed and the wingman jaunted 20 yards further for a marker. Late in the third period, after a sustained drive down the field, Jake Smith stepped through an opening at left tackle and dashed 18 yards across the goal line for a tally. With the strong Rockwall line refusing to bulge and stopping every running play offered by the visitors, the Loboes resorted to one of the finest aerial attacks that has ever been exhibited here. The second period found the Loboes in the air entirely with Painter passing effectively to Wheeler, Jackson and Holloway for short gains. Although these completed tosses menaced the Rockwall line the Yellowjackets somehow managed to hold the Lobos off. As a result of the strong Longview passing attack and the Rockwall running backs first downs were numerous with each team registering about 15. A crowd of approximately 3,000 persons attended the game and the interest and enthusiasm was at fever heat through-out the game hanging in the balance until the end of the third period. Longview brought a crowd of 1,300 here for the contest on a special train. |
